I have absolutely no problem with society coming up with a new term for those who don't identify as male or female, and I'll call anyone whatever they want to be called, but yeah, the specific use of "they/them" is one of the dumbest language-based decisions we've ever made, for the exact reason you just mentioned. Why we didn't just invent new terminology - like "ze/zer" or whatever - is beyond me.

I'm pretty sure it would've been worse if they'd created a new pronoun. That would open up a whole other level of sh*t talking by the dregs I think.

I was listening to the latest episode of The Big Picture podcast, about Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, which hosts Sean and Amanda loved, and even though they're embargoed, they kept comparing it to the *other* multiverse movie coming out this summer - The Flash - which they both clearly hated, without directly naming it. I just found that interesting, compared to all the other reactions so far, especially since I tend to trust Sean, in particular.

I trust Sean too, especially when he likes a film. That said, there have been plenty of instances when he doesn't like something and I still enjoy it, even if I understand his criticisms

Yeah, good point. For instance, he's not a big Christopher Nolan guy, whereas I obviously am. So maybe it's another situation like that.

Early reactions have always been riddled with hyperbole, but the back-to-back early reactions of Flash and Spider-Verse, in particular, have been unlike anything I've seen. Basically, reaction after reaction emphatically declaring both movies the greatest superhero movies of all time... only for actual, sober, level-headed reviews to eventually set proper expectations, and bring both movies back down to earth. Definitely no talking points given, as that's not something that really happens. Instead, yeah, it was more a matter of people rushing to give immediate reviews/hyperbole. The very first screening was at CinemaCon, for theater owners, media types, and some fanboy press, and everyone there was basically breathless in their immediate reactions, having been the very first audience to see it, at an official Warner Bros event, with all kinds of bells and whistles.

Do you think this is simply the trend of media (any type of media) to try and be first and/or just feel like part of the flock that is moving in a particular direction at a point in time?

Certainly feels that way.

It's not even "media," it's just the exact same 30-40 or so film bros/personalities who work for all the usual suspects, being invited to every one of these premieres. And part of their schtick or worth or pride or whatever you want to call it is wrapped up in being the first to provide a reaction to something. It's a status thing, even if on a subconscious level. In fact, there's a site literally called "First Showing" because its founder made a name for himself by being one the guys in the early days of film blogging who saw a lot movies first.

That said, I should clarify that not all of these people are breathless fanboys or craven assh*les. There are plenty of good, honest, trustworthy critics/journalists among this group, it's just that they're tainted by a number of bloggers and fanboy critics who are rarely negative in their reactions if only because they want the studios to keep inviting them back to events and premieres.

Then you also of course get all the fanboy types who don't work in media at all, who find ways to get into early screenings, and because so many of them are idiots who couldn't tell a good movie from a bad one, and worship superhero movies exclusively, they're all out there tweeting their over-the-top reactions as well, and that's how get to the situation we're in.

Yeah, he's a tall dude (I saw him once in person at a Mexican restaurant by my old place). And honestly, out of that group, I think he's my pick. He would absolutely nail an endearing version Clark, and on the Superman side, seeing as no one is ever going to look as perfect as Cavill did in the suit, I'd rather they go in a slightly different direction (i.e. not someone who's going to feel like a lesser/store brand Cavill ripoff). If Hoult bulks up a bit, he could totally pull it off, in his own, unique way.

I mentioned this a while back, but Hoult was the runner-up to Pattinson for The Batman, the runner-up to Teller for Rooster in Top Gun: Maverick, and was the original actor set to play the villain in Mission: Impossible - Fallout, before having to drop out due to scheduling conflicts, a role that of course went to… Henry Cavill. In other words, Hoult is finally due for a win, and the full-circle nature of taking over the role after Cavill would be such a nice touch.

Cast him beside Rachel Brosnahan as the most perfect Lois ever (though Emma Mackey wouldn't be bad either), and I'd be pretty stoked.

of those three, hoult was the only name i recognized. but man, david corenswet looks like a younger, less hulked up henry cavill.

i've never really thought about it, but does superman even really need to be ripped? it's not like he's strong because he works out.

Why does Hollywood insist on hiring British dudes for Superman, Batman, and Spider-Man?

I don't think anyone's "insisting," they're just casting the best actors. Outside of, like, Timothee Chalamet and Austin Butler, America has stopped making movie stars for some insane reason.

Yes! It's cultural appropriation, honestly.

I've been wondering about that. It seems all the current and next wave of actors now are British or Australian.

It's just weird that it's been so consistent for so long now.
