Captain Marvel is a chick? I always thought it was a dude. Shows what I know about comics.

I had that same reaction. I thought Captain Marvel was the dude that was a kid until he said Shazaam or something.

There are 3 Captain Marvels:
  • DC's Captain Marvel, the guy with Superman powers. He says the magic word SHAZAM and transforms from young Billy Batson into Captain Marvel. DC officially changed his name to SHAZAM a few years ago to avoid confusion.

  • Marvel's Captain Mar-vell, who is actually a Kree. He studies Earth, becomes a hero. Somewhere in there, his power gets mixed with a human Carol Danvers.

  • Marvel's Carol Danvers becomes a human Kree hybrid who originally was named Ms. Marvel. Recently she's become more popular, got a new cool costume, and creative team writing her book, and took up the name Captain Marvel. (Ms. Marvel is now used by Kamala Khan, Marvel's first Muslim hero.)
Ms. Marvel had a few costumes, but this is probably the most popular:

Here this, explains it pretty well:

Thanks. The fact that both Marvel and DC have a Captain Marvel, and that Marvel has in fact TWO Captain Marvels, a man and a woman, sure explains my confusion.

Also , if you've never read "The Death of Captain Marvel", which is about the death of the male Capt. Marvel, go read it and thank me later.

...and if you grew up reading Avengers comics in the early 80's, THIS was Captain Marvel:

Back in those days, DC's Captain Marvel was (to me) always Shazam, the Kree Captain Marvel was recently dead (by cancer) and Carol Danvers was Ms. Marvel (although Rogue had stolen her powers in a fight and Danvers was left wandering around for years with no memory).

Shazaam sounds like a Marvel version of He-Man.

And if you like THIS version of Captain Marvel, go read Nextwave and then you can thank me later for that as well.

So, there's been a lot of talk about what they'll do with the Cap mantle when Rogers ultimately dies or sheds the shield. There are two very strong candidates to be the "new" Cap in Falcon and Bucky, both of whom have strong claims to the legacy.

But, what if that's NOT Marvel's plan? What if...

I'm not saying this would be a permanent role, but consider the following:

1. While they haven't always seen eye to eye, Natasha has been Cap's "sidekick" of sorts
2. Marvel has been unable to work in a Black Widow solo film
3. ScarJo has arguably the most star power of any Avenger except for RDJ
4. Sebastian Stan doesn't seem to tie in to the larger Infinity War story
5. Anthony Mackie doesn't really scratch the demographic itch that he might have prior to the introduction of Black Panther

I'm not suggesting that it will happen, only that it would be very cool for a one-off film if it did. It would represent a full circle for Natasha, from Russian spy to American poster child as she hunts down Steve's killer, or completes his last Avengers mission, or completes her story arc with the Winter Soldier by tracking him down and recruiting him after Steve fails to, or whatever.

Just a thought.

Interesting idea. Might be too much of a 180 since Cap is the stalwart, defender of truth and justice, super-strong type. And she's a spy and assassin and morally ambiguous.

Winter Soldier fits the super strong build and might start to regain his memories and morals, but I guess we'll see. You're right, not sure how he fits into the Infinity War story at all......

Yeah I don't know. If going from Russian super spy to American superhero poster child is the line of thinking, then Bucky taking over the mantle isn't far off either..... Wasn't he strongly tied to the Russians prior to us seeing him with Hydra in CAP2? I think the more important question is if we will see Bucky in AoU, prior to him showing up in the third CAP movie which he will likely end up in somehow IMO. We know Natasha is going to be in Avengers, and will likely to be in the next CAP movie.

It's pretty clear that Jackie Robinson is going to take over as Cap if Chris Evans dies, right?

She wouldn't even really have to BE Captain America, just carry the shield while she completes some last mission for Steve. She would be the bridge between Caps, so to speak.

Or Bucky. They've foreshadowed it both ways.

It's stated explicity in Thor 2 and Guardians.

Am I the only one that is excited by, but also worried about, the extremely huge cast that we might potentially see for Infinity War pt. 2? Imagine a poster with the following, give or take a few for deaths or characters that randomly aren't included:

Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Black Widow, Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver, Vision, War Machine, Nick Fury, Doctor Strange, Black Panther, Spider-Man, Falcon, Winter Soldier, Starlord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket, Groot, Captain Marvel... plus potentially any characters added in Guardians 2, maybe Ant-Man...

Good golly. I know they won't all make it to IW2, or even if they're alive they may not be included, but the potential is there.

My theory has always been that IW2 will be two separate storylines that converge: one in space featuring the Guardians, maybe Hulk, maybe Captain Marvel, maybe even Iron Man... and then one on Earth featuring the rest of the Avengers.

I would love for IW2 to get the Grand Budapest poster treatment.

IW will have a large cast, almost assuredly, but they'll likely need every one of them to defeat Thanos. Also, he's going to kill a ton of heroes.

Hm, I wonder if we get to see some Thanos vs Loki in the next Thor movie or either IW movies... That would be fun.

Marketing won't change things, for me. I'll still watch and hope it's great. I'm just not looking forward to it like most of these movies.

But we dont know which infinity stones are which.

We suspect the tesseract is space (Avengers). Loki's Staff is mind (Avengers). We suspect the aether is power some think its reality (the physics changes in London, Malakan wanting to shift the entire world back to Darkness). The orb (GotG) who knows.

Its all patchy. I wonder if Age of Ultron will even deal with infinity stones, there is so little time to link it to Guardians who knows.
