I have to agree about the Thorns. Great CD!

Agreed 110%.

I'm also offended that Edward V. Halen is so far down the list.... Instant discredit to me for the list. While I don't expect him to be #1 there is no reason he should be that far down. He may not be the best but he's the one that made me pick up a guitar years and years ago. Who else learned how to play a guitar trying to play "Eruption" and learning how to tap?

...not to beat this John Mayer thing to death, but I just read that Buddy Guy played with him and his band during their set at ACL. He joined them on Come Back to Bed, a nice tune from JM's new album, then for Damn Right I've Got the Blues and Leave my Little Girl Alone. As far as I know, Buddy Guy doesn't throw down with bubble gum.

He needs to start putting some out on rock stations then...

Like Buddy Guy does?

Forgive my sarcasm, but I have very little use for radio anymore.

I don't really care if he puts anything out on radio, but he is getting his name out to the general public as a chick pop guy and he is hiding this gift of guitar-badassism. It would be better if he wasn't going to publicize the good stuff to not publicize the bad stuff, too...Otherwise if someone mentions how great of a guitarist Mayer is, we'll always have to listen to that dumb ***** at the party say "I know! Wonderland is awesome!"

Chick pop guy money spends the same as guitar-badassism money (sadly maybe better), and he's happy with what he's doing. Obviously money isn't the be-all, but let's be honest, there are very few true "artists" out there that any of us actually hear who don't care about it. I'm not going to die on a hill defending this guy, but I think he likes the music he's making and he's content with his career. You may respect him less for it, but he's one of these exceptional musicians who doesn't mind making pop music and isn't pretentious. I'd compare him to some other greats who weren't/aren't musical snobs, but I'm sure I'd mention someone who's a lightning rod for someone's scorn.

And I don't think the pop stuff is bad, it's just pop music. Maybe we disagree on the potential merit of pop music, and that's okay. He's very good at several different things, and he's okay that one style is more popular than another. Hard core guitar folks don't dig that, and that's fine. Fair enough. I don't think he's worried about trying to prove himself to that crowd. I suppose that burden falls to folks like me who choose to defend owning his CDs against those eager to dismiss him as TRL fodder.

The more music I listen to, the less I care for the generalizations or broad categories anyway. Most musicians make some good music, some not-so-good music, and a lot of stuff in between. The rush to be dismissive with certain artists/bands who seem to fit certain stereotypes (and I'm certainly guilty of it) probably (at least some of the time) says more about us than the folks we're dismissing. Was that judgmental enough? I hope so. It's a comment on me as much as anyone else, though I hope it's gradually becoming less true.

Roy Buchanan at 57 gotta go up a couple dozen spots here imo.

Kirk Cobain at #12, no gd way.

Switch him and Roy Buchanan out.

Thoughts on this?

Cobain has no business in the Top 100

If a list comes from Rolling Stone, you know it's going to be awful.

That list is an absolute joke.

Joan Jett????? HAHAHAHA

Notable omissions:
Steve Vai
Joe Satriani
Alan Holdsworth
Steve Morse
Yngwie Malmsteen

I haven't heard of about half of the people on that list.
Agree 100%. Jimi Hendrix? He was a pioneer... an innovator... but not Number 1. The entire list is laughable... needs to be put in a new order and to include many, many missing names.

Jimi absolutely should be #1.

I'm not saying Dave Grohl is a Top 100 Guitarist but whatever metric put Kurt Cobain in the Top 12 should definitely put Dave on the list somewhere.

If you don't include Chet Atkins, Glen Campbell, and Roy Clark then your list is not credible. Putting EVH at 70 pretty sealed list is not credible
Bruce Almighty

This is an old list. The most current RS list has EVH at 4th. It does have the typical RS woke crap with Joni Mitchell at 9th and Rosetta Tharpe at 6th.

Glen Campbell was absolutely one of the greatest ever. He played guitar for a ton of bands from the 60s to the 80s in multiple genres besides country including the Beach Boys, Righteous Brothers, Frank Sinatra, Elvis, and The Monkeys. No way he shouldn't be high on the list.

Here is an interview with Alice Cooper at his passing -

Alex Lifeson not on list . Lol.

Also Steve Gaines not on list or Alan Collins.

Kurt Cobain?! Really?

As far as country guitarists... Jerry Reed was a virtuoso and he's not in the list.
