So this Kinberg guy got both Star Wars and Star Trek to reboot? Is that even legal in sci-fi law?

Seems like he's crossing the streams and will result in implosion.

JJ Abrams went from Star Trek Into Darkness (2013) to Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015).

Well, my Dad took that same 11-year-old to see Animal House that year with all those titties, sex references, etc, so there's that.

Not saying I didn't like Bad Batch, just that I fear we're going to have Wedge replaced by Omega if we get Rogue Squadron.

A bit more on the Kinberg/Kennedy situation, from Matthew Belloni's newsletter last night...

Quote:

Star Trek vs. Star Wars: Not mentioned in today's news that X-Men producer Simon Kinberg has joined the increasingly farcical parade of filmmakers developing Star Wars movies: Kinberg was already signed to reboot and shepherd the Star Trek franchise at Paramount. According to two sources, the new Trek script, by Seth Grahame-Smith, is done and on its way toward a green light, possibly by the end of the year, for a shoot in the first half of 2025. Toby Haynes (Andor) is directing the origin story, set well before the U.S.S. Enterprise era. So any Star Wars obligations for Kinberg would need to wait until after that.

If a Paramount/Disney franchise face-off sounds familiar, remember that a post-Star Trek J.J. Abrams was signed to a huge overall deal at Paramount, in 2013, when he abruptly bailed to make Star Wars: The Force Awakens for Lucasfilm and Disney. Then, four years later, Abrams abandoned his Paramount deal again to make The Rise of Skywalker, which prompted then-Paramount chief Jim Gianopulos to demand - and receive - a kickback from Disney.

But that's not the situation here. Kinberg let Paramount know in advance that a Star Wars trade announcement was coming today. And the supposed trilogy he's planning for Lucasfilm is, uh, far, far away from happening. With Lucasfilm and its president Kathy Kennedy, that usually means the project will languish in development, get bogged down by notes that over-rely on "canon" and conflict with what was initially agreed upon by all parties, and ultimately never actually proceed to production. Jon Favreau's TheMandalorian & Grogu made it and is still set for May 2026, but let's all repeat the long and distinguished list of filmmakers hired on Star Warsand then summarily fired or replaced: the Game of Thrones guys… Lord and MillerPatty JenkinsDamon LindelofColin TrevorrowJ.D. Dillard - okay, I'll stop.

Regardless, inside Disney, the spotlight on Kennedy is even brighter after the failure of Disney+ series The Acolyte and the exit of writer Steven Knight from the planned Daisy Ridley film to be directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, which isn't officially delayed but seems to be teetering. Kennedy, normally press-shy, has been doing a few lunches lately with media peoplelikely on the advice of her longtime personal publicist, Simon Halls - which is probably a good idea if the pressure on her really ratchets up. (Reps for Disney and Paramount declined to comment.)

Correct. There are currently TWO new Star Trek movies in development. The first is a prequel/Starfleet origin story of sorts (which Kinberg is producing), which Paramount hopes will kick off a new franchise/sequels, and then the second is a fourth Chris Pine-and-the-gang movie, which keeps getting delayed due to script issues. Both would take place in the same universe/continuum, though.

there was some article posted late summer on Forbes I think explaining how Disney still has not recouped its $4B Star Wars expenditure even after 12 years.

surprising when you consider all revenues - movies, digital, disc, theme parks, licensing from toys games, books, comics, video games, etc..

production costs in aggregate have been ridiculously high so that none of the productions are generating much profit overall. again in aggregate. and the licensing and other ancillary revenues have not (yet) made up the slack.

Star Wars movie ideas

1. Version of the World's Most Dangerous Game: Mandalorian BH recruited for a vision; drugged by rich client, stripped of his armor and weapons, hunted for sport by client (wearing his own armor) on grounds full of wild animals and danger. I like the final shot being the Mando infiltrating the client's home, finding the combat suit, but then killing the guy with his bare hands instead, embracing his evolution into a true predator.

2. From one of the Star Wars "Tales" comics: A Jedi appears to be investigating a dark side user who is murdering beings on a nameless planet. At some point it's revealed the dark sider user is her split personality and she is being hunted by very normal, non-powered local police detectives who have to stop her; give it a tone like Seven or Shutter Island

3. Hyperspace Exploration: Starts as a race between 2 or 3 different groups of scientists / explorers trying to be the first to achieve hyperspace travel in a sort of race from Point A to Point B, but goes dark when one to the teams vanishes into some sort of space between the stars where sinister things lurk; maybe they accidentally bring one back with them.

4. Prison Planet Escape Plot: In the middle of the Galactic Civil War, a few Rebels and Imperials wind up in the same prison on a world that hasn't sided with either faction and have to work together to bust their way out - lots of room for cool alien characters in this one. A bad-ass younger Hutt would be a great unlikely hero. Make it as different from great Andor arc as possible; in space like GOTG or way underground, or a place like CLoud City where you get out and you're still in a floating city.

5-7: KOTOR trilogy. Movie 1: Jedi vs. Mandalorian Galactic War with Revan and Malak as the heroes of the Republic; Movie 2: Revan/Malak into the unknowns, fall to the dark side, discover the Star Forge, ends with climactic battle of Malak betraying Revan; Movie 3: Better version of the events of the KOTOR game - Revan reborn as a Jedi -Bastila, HK-47, Canderous, Carth, Mission, Jolee, Zalbaar, Calo Nord, Admiral Saul, everyone gets a chance to shine.

8. The Vong Invade (or something similar): Far into the future, the reborn Republic and its legion of Jedi are invaded by aliens from beyond the galaxy that have all organic technology and cannot be felt at all in the Force. They want to terraform the worlds of the Republic into their own environments as a massive colonization. Alternatively, they can only be felt / attacked using the dark side of the Force, leaving the Jedi in a moral dilemma of sitting out the war or tempting the dark side to defeat them.

9. Vader Unleashed: Set 1-5 years after ROTS, Vader hunts down the last few known Jedi (besides Obi-Wan and Yoda) while plagued by ghosts of his final days as one of their kind. Could easily have Hayden be in it at his current age and any number of other actors; de-aged Portman, Ian McDiarmid, etc. Would be incredible having him walk the halls of the burned out Jedi Temple as Vader.

10. I, Droid: In the Old Republic, when its master is killed by an unknown assassin (probably a Sith), its droid servant (something similar to HK or K2 in looks, but not initially a warrior) alters its programming to continue serving its master by hunting down his murderer and bringing them to justice. Be a reverse of tech vs. Force powers, but tech being the "good guy".

4 sounds like it could mirror The Land That Time Forgot. At the end of that one, the Nazis try to leave the island and their submarine ends up being destroyed and they die.

Maybe the Dark Side users try something similar in your proposed scenario and get taken out by a solar flare.

Maybe it's a form of symbiote like Venom, but it's like the anti-midiclorian trying to exert dominance over other beings in the galaxy rather than live in harmony

edit: or steal from the clone wars and it makes people zombies. Wasn't that a Genosis thing?

My son and I have been watching a ton of Discovery Channel style documentaries lately. What if…you look at the Archeology and History of the Star Wars universe in a Faux Documentary. Could be a cool way to explore the Jedi Temples / Sith Temples, holicrons, and some of the Mortis stuff.

It might also serve as a creative place to explore new storylines and do some world building without rehashing the Skywalker Story.

I think they've done that quite extensively in 2 books - a Jedi one and a Sith one. They are very expensive though, I've only seen them online.
