Bottom line business. This show must have really bombed

And the sad thing is that a handful of discerning, real OG SW fans in the pitchroom could have saved Disney $180 million. Fire Kathleen.

Glad I didn't waste my time on it. I think it's the first live action Star Wars that I've passed on.

You are OBSESSED with the idea of this fictional, discerning OG SW fan who somehow remains employed by Lucasfilm, but sits silently in the corner of the conference room, never to raise his or her voice for fear of being cancelled/yelled at by the big bad woke Lucasfilm executives. This has to be like the 10th time you've brought up this imaginary person, and it's so damn funny how desperately you need them to exist.

My point was actually that there weren't any in the room, hence this garbage being approved. Good try, though.

Well the nine previous times you've mentioned them, they were in the room.

Anyone who was in that room meeting Leslye and hearing what she pitched was a ****ing moron, period. Not sure if I could make that any clearer for you so you won't misconstrue it.

So, with The Acolyte no more, the only three series in the works now that we know of are season one of Skeleton Crew (2024), season two of Andor (2025), and season two of Ahsoka (2026?). Otherwise... nothing. Combined with the officially announced movies currently shooting/in development, this is the potential slate...

2024

Skeleton Crew
Season 1 (8 Episodes)
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt20600980/
December 3, 2024
Disney+

2025

Andor
Season 2 (12 Episodes)
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt9253284/
2025 TBA
Disney+

2026

The Mandalorian & Grogu
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt30825738/
May 22, 2026
Theatrical Exclusive

Untitled Star Wars Movie
(New Jedi Order, aka the Rey movie?)
December 18, 2026
Theatrical Exclusive

Ahsoka
Season 2
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt13622776/
2026 TBA?
Disney+

2027

Untitled Star Wars Movie
(Dawn of the Jedi from dir. James Mangold?)
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt27485223/
December 17, 2027
Theatrical Exclusive

... and that's it.

With...

- Untitled Dave Filoni Star Wars Movie (aka Heir to the Empire)
- Untitled Shawn Levy Star Wars Movie
- Untitled Lando Movie

... the only other projects in development that we know of.

I still have hope that a lot of these are going to deliver, and that Kennedy is most likely on her way out at the end of the year. But the fact that D23 came and went and we still don't know the slate past May 2026 is so incredibly weird to me. That said, because Kennedy is likely/hopefully on her way out, IMO, that's the only thing that would make sense out of so much currently being up in the air.

It's really like I watched a completely separate show. I was in the entire time. Did it have things to improve, absolutely, but improve them in season 2. It honestly made me excited for SW for the first time in a while.

I do think people saw two different shows. It comes down to how people viewed episode 7. For me and a lot of people here. The Jedi cover up, Sol's actions, and the fallout from their action makes zero sense. Episode 7 was setup to show the terrible thing the Jedi did, but in looking at the show, it really seems like Sol and company could have just made that the official report, why lie or hide any of it?

Others watches the show and thought it made sense for the Jedi to hide their actions.

Couple that with tonal issues, pacing issues, uneven writing, and poor acting, and the show just felt like a rough draft.

To me the biggest miss is that you didn't need to make the Jedi evil/incompetent. You just needed to show how their rules made them inflexible, arrogant, and susceptible to Sith trickery.

That being said, the show would have been much better if it was told from Darth Bortles perspective. Saw him training as a Sith, manipulating Mae/corrupting Osha in more detail, and the big reveal was how he was cast out of the Jedi way back when.

This show really highlighted how SW inability to tell multiple stories in a show really hurts these shows. Couple that with the Fallout show coming out and blowing people away, Acolyte was in big trouble from the start.

Regarding The Acolyte being cancelled (or not renewed, whatever the terminology is): I never had one ounce of interest in it. The advertising made the show look terrible. I have yet to see anything more out of it. And this is coming from someone who, in 6th grade way back in 1978, had a (derisive at the time by the ass clowns I went to school with) nickname of "Mr. Star Wars". If you cannot make a show that would appeal to someone like me, then failed you have.

Every previous Star Wars D+ show I have anticipated greatly. I was liking The Book of Boba Fett until they rolled out the street punks on the pastel colored speeder bikes. I really liked much of Obi Wan and Ahsoka, and loved all of The Mandalorian. Andor was by far the best of the bunch, and I will be watching Andor season 2 when it first airs. One of these days, when I grow tired of watching the grass grow, I might watch The Acolyte.

If I had 5 billion dollars burning a hole in my wallet, I'd buy Star Wars from Disney. I'd hire a few folks from TA to write, and I'd have Star Wars back to near TESB greatness in short order.

Rogue Squadron has all the ingredients. They should really focus on that

  • Recognizable to both die hard and casual fans
  • Merges Star Wars with a genre allowing for both good action and character stories/themes (see Top Gun)
  • Plenty of source material (novels/games) to pull inspiration from if need be
  • Connected to the characters/stories that were big hits without being centered around those characters i.e. it can go in a new direction but still feel familiar

If they give the right people time, it can be a hit. A movie, a trilogy, a D+ show, whatever

Yeah I bought the premise of episode 7. The story was built up to be that the Jedi were under attack from the outside wanting to review the order. Over time people were increasingly questioning their unchecked power. Yes there was bad writing but I thought a great line/idea was the senator saying that the Jedi profess to control that which can't be controlled. The Jedi thinks he's talking about the force and he says "no, emotions". And that was the central premise, that Sol was a Jedi who could not control his emotions vs. an outside force that feared that and wanted to then impose rules on the Jedi. Expand that to Darth Bortles wanting to be free to teach his own student and questioning why the Jedi are the only ones who can set the rules when they themselves are imperfect.

I agree with a lot of the critiques of the show but it had good soil to grow from and it sucks that some of the good was abandoned.

Even a show like Clone Wars, which is rightly praised as some of the best SW stuff ever, took a season or two to really hit it's stride. I think this could have gone somewhere exciting.

I don't know that Rogue Squadron means much to a casual fan but in general I agree with you.

While The Acolyte was a bust I'd love to see Disney create more content around non-name characters, there's so much rich potential in the SW universe (and to their credit they look to be doing this with Skeleton Crew). Imagine a Jedi Academy series where we get to follow new Padawan recruits as they learn the ways of the force, or we have a western type series with Cobb Vanth where he's running down outlaws and defending his town from pirates and the occasional Empire visit.

You set a Rogue Squadron show that starts at Hoth and goes through the Death Star battle at ROTJ seems like it would be a creative/financial success.

Only issue is recasting Wedge but I don't think that would be much of an issue.

If this show actually told that story more effectively, I think it would have been better accepted. But for me it never got there.

To me this gets back to Lucasfilm. More shows fall below average than above average across multiple creators. Which to me speaks to a Lucasfilm problem.

I'm really forgiving, particularly with Star Wars, and I tried to give this show the benefit of the doubt and let it find its feet. But other than a couple fun action scenes it just wasn't good.

Characters flipped motivations on a dime, the story and dialogue were clunky, pacing was all over the place, and they made the Jedi incompetent and corrupt. Tons of discussion on this all through this thread if you want details.
This has to be one of the major frustrations with the fan base since the OT. In the OT, a Jedi Knight was shown to be this really awesome thing, but in damn near everything since then they've been shown to be bumbling and incompetent to a point where they've become a joke

Maybe I missed the point, but I never understood why these Jedi "at their height" in the high republic were dumber and less skilled than those in the prequels and Clone Wars.

Actually, you could make the point that this has occurred throughout history if you apply real world to this.

You are at maximum hubris and complacency has or is setting in at the height of most societies. They are less skilled because they are not forced to flex their abilities during the good times.

In other words: Hard Times Create Strong Men, Strong Men Create Good Times, Good Times Create Weak Men, Weak Men Create Hard Times

They tried something new, but completely failed at execution. There were some really good ideas and visually the show was great. Star Wars needs new leadership. It has become clear the problem is at the top.

Yeah, the idea had potential but the execution and choices made were suspect. I'm hopefully that Skeleton Crew delivers on both.
