Chuck Windig as the "opener" for new novel Canon was a horrible decision by the Disney Story folks as well... his first book in his series was almost unreadable... the second was a little better. I did like the Sloan character though.

I have never thought balance meant equal good and evil, so the Snoke commentary confused me. Perhaps, he is wrong. IDK.

I think the balance talked about in The Last Jedi has a different meaning for those characters (and the story makers) than the balance discussed in the prequels. Like you, I never thought it meant equal numbers or strength. Luke and Snoke both talked about it that way in TLJ, though.

This is a fascinating read:

Honestly, I've never understand the whole prophecy / balance-to-the-Force thing.

Because it's vague and poorly thought out.

Though I will add, the most likely explanation of it was given by Obi-Wan at the end of his duel with Anakin. "You were supposed to destroy the Sith..."

Which, he later helped to do, but still.

Doesn't Luke call it out the prophecy as BS and hubris in TLJ?

I'd kill to see the original cut. Definitely a fascinating interview.

I don't remember him mentioning the prophesy directly, but he did call them out for allowing Palps to take control.

All I know is the last act of Rogue One rivals ROTJ for the best in the series. IMHO.

1st act of Empire is pretty damn strong.

The last act of ESB is my all-timer. Because Vader.

But the last act of Rogue One was amazing. Because Vader.

ROTJ's first act is good, second act is outright bad, third act is top tier.

RO's first and second acts are mediocre (but not bad), third act is top tier.

ESB has three great acts. None probably reach that top tier of the two above, but all three are great. Zero weaknesses.

(Note: I do prefer Luke/Vader from ESB over ROTJ. But the space battle puts ROTJ higher overall.)

I think the first act of ESB may be a favorite.

Among first acts or overall?

First acts, I would put it tied with ROTS for the best in the series.

No no just first acts, all acts. I love the Hoth setting and what all is going on.

It would take me ceasing all work for at least 2 weeks and probably using some sort of A.I./machine learning algorithm to do this exercise properly.

One of the best complaints I've ever seen, probably just below complaining about the infusion of politics on this board.

Well, might as well.

First Acts Ranked:
1a. The Empire Strikes Back
1b. Revenge of the Sith
3. A New Hope
4. Return of the Jedi
5. The Force Awakens
6. The Last Jedi
7. Rogue One
8. The Phantom Menace
9. Attack of the Clones

Second Acts Ranked:
1. The Empire Strikes Back
2. Revenge of the Sith
3. The Phantom Menace
4. Attack of the Clones
5. A New Hope
6. The Force Awakens
7. The Last Jedi
8. Rogue One
9. Return of the Jedi

Third Acts Ranked:
1a. Return of the Jedi
1b. Rogue One
3. The Empire Strikes Back (Very close behind)
4. A New Hope
5. Revenge of the Sith
6. The Phantom Menace
7. The Last Jedi
8. Attack of the Clones
9. The Force Awakens

Few notes:
  • I didn't realize till now how weak the third act of TFA is to me. (Rey/Kylo is great but I am not a fan of the Starkiller battle.)
  • The PT seems to shine in the second acts. Order 66, Podrace, and Coruscant chases are particular favorites, hence their strong performance overall in that category.
  • OT REALLY shines in the final acts. I doubt this needs explanation.

Hard not to rank Episode IV's first act No. 1 amongst first acts; it set the bar for the entire franchise. Come to think of it, in terms of cinematic history, it may rank pretty high among all first acts ever, especially in terms of it's impact on our culture.
TCTTS

Good observations, and yeah, I think you're right overall.

The second act of The Phantom Menace is probably my favorite act of the PT: the pod race, the Qui-Gon/Darth Maul dual in the desert, Obi-Wan meeting Anakin, the arrival to Coruscant + the Jedi Council, etc is all pretty solid stuff. Heck, if not for the Gungans, I'd even move the third act of TPM higher. The Obi-Wan/Qui-Gon/Maul fight at the end is still one of the best sequences of the entire franchise.

It's just that I can't stand literally everything else about the prequels.

The third act of ROTS is cool, no doubt, but mainly because it's finally happening, not because it's executed particularly well. I think I just really, really dislike Hayden Christensen's performance overall. I could forgive so much more of those movies if it was just another actor.

Gungans are the only reason the third act of TPM is not in my top 5. Duel of the Fates is just so damn good, and unfortunately the Gungans bring that average way down.

First act of Rogue One is definitely shaky, but it has one of my favorite moments in a Star Wars film. Cassian shooting that dude in the back. Sets the tone that the film is going to be different.

Gungans and the battle droids... There is a lot of blame to go around in that battle sequence.
TCTTS

Yeah, I was referring to that entire sequence, re: the Gungans in act three.
TCTTS

Btw, how much better would TPM be if the Gungans were a cooler species? If they weren't designed/played for laughs but rather they were competent warriors? And instead of Jar Jar being a buffoon, he was a badass who did something noble, but ultimately against societal rules, to get banned? Then had a really cool redemption story in that final battle?
