About to finish 12 years a Slave. It's very informative about slave life in Louisiana. I wish it had some chapters about what his family in NY thought when he just disappeared out of nowhere. Maybe the last couple chapters will have some insight into that. B+

I've been watching the Vikings series on the History Channel and it has me interested in ancient Norse culture. Does anyone have any suggestions for books? I don't care if it's fiction or non fiction.

1) The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas: A+ -- Yep, the book was better than the movie.
2) Diablo III: Storm of Light by Nate Kenyon: C+
3) Galveston: A Novel by Nic Pizzolatto (guy that created and wrote True Detective): A+ -Great book, very quick read and would recommend to anyone that watched True Detective. Has a similar gritty feeling as the HBO series.
4) Star Wars: Darth Plagueis - B+ -Enjoyable backstory into who was Emperor Palpatine's master and how Palpatine was trained.
5) Promise of Blood - Book One of the Powder Mage Trilogy - A - Another quick, enjoyable fantasy book. Set in a time period akin to Pre-Industrial Europe where magic and industry are side by side. Subset of mages snort gunpowder like coke and use bullet time.

I need to find another book to start, I'm sure I'll find something on this thread

I just finished The Summer Tree - Guy Gavriel Kay (Fionavar Tapestry #1)

Writing not too great, he definitely stole A TON of his world from Tolkien's Middle Earth, but the story is good. I'd give it a solid B.

Gonna finish the Fionavar Tapestry trilogy though.

Just finished the second book in Cronin's Passage triology. Holy crap, it was fantastic. The author is a professor down at Rice and a lot of the books events take place in post-apocalyptic Texas.

The third book comes out this fall.

I've been working on finishing Winter's Heart (Book 8 of WOT) for a couple months now and simultaneously reading The Wilderness Warrior: Theodore Roosevelt and the Crusade for America. I'm usually a very quick reader but these books have taken forever.

Will second the Hangman's Daughter series Tanya mentioned for the first two books, after that it becomes a little worn. R.W. Peake for historical fiction fans who like well researched detail. Erik Wecks one novel for sci-fi light. Eric Margolis for non-fiction contemporary fp.
