I have to wait until 11:59PM but from what I hear this is the best movie of the series thus far...

just got out of it. pretty good. i remember the book being different, but i can't tell if that was just a product of a longer story being split into two movies.

i'll keep my comments to myself until after you peons have seen it.

Not bad. It was the more boring half of the book so things were drawn out. It somewhat followed the book, but as always the tweak things.
Philip J Fry
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Somewhat followed? I think to it followed the book almost to the tee. At least, out of all the HP movies, this one was the closest to the source material. I can only think of a couple scenes that were significantly different, but none of those really advanced the story line. Other scenes were just shortened.

I guess I'll refrain from commenting until later tonight, but I can say this...this was absolutely the most well acted HP movie they've made.

the first half of that book is hard to make exciting. i remember while reading it thinking this is the worst book of them all, only to pick up at the end.

you definitely got the sense of how alone they were during that time.

The spend so much time in the forest in this book that it gets a bit slow. Fortunately the ending should be great.

As somebody who gets dragged along to these midnight showings for security, this one seemed more like homework so you understand the next part than entertainment.

I'm sure those that are really in to HP liked it.
Farmer1906
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I just feel like it left out little things that could have much it so much better. I feel like you needed to read the book to catch everything or else you'd be like why did that happen or how did that happen.

I can think of at least one thing that they changed fairly significantly that I thought was one of the best written scenes of the book.

SPOILERS BELOW-------------

In the book, the scene between Harry and Hedwig in the beginning with Harry being angry and then Hedwig taking the kill curse to save Harry was really poignant. The way they changed it in the book REALLY cheapened that scene, and it aggravated me. It seems like they only did it because it was a sad scene and they didn't want to make people sad. Granted, not really a plot device, but I really appreciated that whole scene from the book.

END SPOILER--------------------

They definitely did some great stuff putting the book on film. I thought the CGI was top notch as well.

Serious Foul Play
How long do you want to ignore this user?
SPOILERS AHOY:

It has been confirmed that the movie will begin with a scene with the Minister for Magic, Rufus Scrimgeour, making a speech about how times will "grow darker still" to Ministry employees.

There will be a scene with Neville, Luna, and Ginny on the Hogwarts Express.

It is thought that a chase scene on land will be added into the Seven Potters fight sequence.
Harry and Hagrid spend some time on a roadway.

It has been announced that Bill will be attacked during the Battle over Little Whinging.
Bill already has his scars when he first appears, attributing them to Greyback, but we don't see him get them.

It has been hinted at that an extended wand battle between Umbridge and Harry will be included during the Infiltration of the Ministry scene.
Didn't happen. There was a wand battle with Yaxley as the three escaped. I don't remember if that's in the book.

A chase scene with the Snatchers will take place .

Harry Potter will not be disguised as "Barny Weasley" during the wedding.

In an interview, director of the film David Yates announced that a scene will be added where Hermione Granger and Harry Potter are dancing, and, while dancing, they reveal some secrets about each other. [265]
Harry dances with Hermione to cheer her up after Ron leaves. There are no secrets revealed, and they of course shy away from any potential romance.

A scene will be added where Hermione Granger leaves her home.

The use of characters omitted from previous films such as Bill and Charlie Weasley, Fleur Delacour, and Rufus Scrimgeour will likely require the addition of some exposition to explain their presence. In addition, some changes made for the Half-Blood Prince film, such as the circumstances of Harry hiding the potions textbook, and the destruction of The Burrow, may also result in some additions.
Minor explanations were given. The circumstances of the hiding of the textbook won't matter until part 2.

A scene will be added showing Lord Voldemort searching for Harry in the Forest of Dean.
Nope.

David Heyman informed Mugglenet in a recent podcast that an additional scene will be added to end Part 1 and still keep intrigue so people will watch Part 2.
I assume this was the scene where Voldemort gets the elder wand and casts a lightning spell since this ended the film.

Harry and Hermione will not be under the guise of Polyjuice Potion when they venture into Godric's Hollow.

In the book, Harry was attacked by Nagini in a dark room in Bathilda Bagshot's home. In the film, the attack somehow moves into the home next door into a children's play room.

In the book, the trio surrender to the Snatchers and are taken to Malfoy Manor, but in the film, a chase scene will be added.

In the book, Mr. Ollivander didn't know anything about the Deathly Hallows. In the film, he seems to have some basic knowledge of them.
Didn't really notice if he did.

In the trailer, Harry lets Hedwig fly around outside while he is alone at 4 Privet Drive, but in the book, Harry does not do this. Also, Hedwig returns while Harry and Hagrid are being pursued and blocks the Killing Curse a Death Eater casts at Harry. This was done to make her death more meaningful as well as having to avoid including Stan Shunpike.

In the book, Harry says "Voldemort" prompting the Snatchers to show up. In the film, Xenophilius Lovegood says it in his home during Harry, Ron, and Hermione's visit with him, resulting in the chase where they are ultimately caught and taken to Malfoy Manor.

Peter Pettigrew is not killed by his own hand, he is stunned by Dobby, as it would be deemed too graphic for a man to kill himself, even if it wasn't his choice.

In the book, Bellatrix only tortures Hermione. In the film, she tortures her, uses a whip on her, and engraves the word "Mudblood" on her arm.
She does still engrave "Mudblood" on her arm.

Harry sends Kreacher to find Mundungus Fletcher before hearing the tale of Regulus Black's death.

Dobby is seen more in the film than he is in the book. In the book, he only appears at Malfoy Manor to save Harry and everyone. In the film, he brings Mundungus Fletcher to Harry at 12 Grimmauld Place along with Kreacher. Dobby is still wearing his ragged dress even though he is free.
But he has shoes!

Harry and Lupin's argument does not take place at Grimmauld Place.

Viktor Krum does not argue with Xenophilius Lovegood at the wedding.

Remus Lupin tells Harry, Ron, and Hermione to go when the Death Eaters attack the wedding.

Rufus Scrimgeour arrives to give Harry, Ron, and Hermione their bequests from Dumbledore's will the morning of the wedding.

Hermione wears a red dress to the wedding as opposed to the lilac one she wears in the book.

When Voldemort takes Lucius Malfoy's wand, he snaps the snake's head off and throws it on the table

Harry and Ginny's kiss takes place in the Burrow's kitchen instead of Ginny's bedroom. George interrupts them instead of Ron bursting in on them.

Harry and Hagrid leave 4 Privet Drive and head straight for the Burrow instead of to the Tonks' parents, Andromeda and Ted's house.

Tonks's pregnancy has been brushed aside. It is possible that it will be explored more in Part 2 seeing as Luke Newberry has been cast as Teddy Lupin in the epilogue.
It's almost mentioned, but she's interrupted.

Instead of hearing Hermione tell the Tale of the Three Brothers, animation will be shown while she reads the story.
And it's AWESOME.

The Death Eater seen on the train tracks stopping the Hogwarts Express in the trailer is said to be looking for Harry. It was believed by some people that it was when Luna was kidnapped from the train.

As when the wedding is attacked, Harry sees Ginny fighting a Death Eater and tries to run to her but is stopped by Lupin whom tells Harry to leave.

Harry's disguises as Albert Runcorn wear off him quicker than Ron's or Hermione's, as when in the elevator of the Ministry of Magic Harry makes his Patronus like he did in the third film.

Cho Chang, Katie Bell and Cormac McLaggen are all seen on the Hogwarts Express, even though they should have graduated in Half Blood Prince.
Didn't notice.

SPOILERS

I was thinking about that myself. I decided that it would be easier to do it that way than have to explain to the audience that the death eaters knew it was Harry because he used the disarming spell.

The one thing I wanted to see was Hagrid jumping off the bike onto the death eater broomstick. I was pretty disappointed that didn't happen.

I also felt like they left out the scene where Ron begs Harry and Hermione top stop saying Voldemort. They just start saying "you know who" randomly.

The other issue with the film came from the fact that they left important pieces of information out of the previous films. For example, the mirror. There is absolutely no explanation to why Harry keeps looking at the shard of mirror that Sirius gave him...let alone explain that Sirius gave it to him to begin with! They never mentioned it in OotP and tried to pretend that he had it all along.

From my memory of the book, Harry began obsessing over the Hallows well before Voldemort found the Elder Wald.

Beyond that, the movie nailed it, imho. I wished they had extended a few scenes, but I was really happy with the feel and flow of the movie overall.

Speaking of the feel, I was shocked that this movie had almost no soundtrack. I found it refreshing.

I saw the first 35 minutes that were leaked two days ago and I can't wait till Saturday to watch the whole thing. In the first 35 minutes I can really tell that this movie follows the book more than all of the others.

I enjoyed the book series and earlier movies, but it concerned me when they decided to make this into two movies. Thought first half of book was slow.

As one complaint, I thought they missed opportunity in book to show what was happening with rest of war while they wandered around the woods. Could have been exciting hearing about giants and dragons and the other wizard schools as well as the good guy adults.

You are correct. Harry figures out about the Hallows and realizes that Dumbeldore had the wand the whole time. He then gets into Voldemorts mind and sees that he is already at Hogwarts and on his way to to steal the wand. It is this scene that kind of snaps Harry out of his obsession and gets him focused back on the Horecruxes.

definitely the best HP movie so far, it was pretty damn close to staying as true to the book as possible and had plenty of action scenes to keep the pacing up to par during their travels

SPOILER

There is still the loose end of the explanation of the other horcruxes to tie up. That was the most disappointing part of Half Blood Prince which left out the Gaunts and the other memories. I thought they would do maybe a flashback or something to Dumbledore and Harry finding out about the Hufflepuff cup, the speculation on an object of Ravenclaw, and Dumbledore revealing his feelings on the snake.

Towards the early part of the movie at the Burrow, Ron talks to Harry about the diary, the ring, and the locket and they refer to more. Then after the locket gets destroyed by Ron, he mentions that "only 2 more to go".

Also, there is very little regarding the "angst" that Harry felt about Dumbledore leaving him this task, being childhood friends with Grindelwald, and so forth.

Also, in the book, it is understood that the Death Eaters found out who the real Harry was in the beginning battle because he cast a disarming spell which Lupin tells him later at the Burrow has become his "trademark". In the movie, its the interference of Hedwig in the battle that gives Harry away.

Overall though, thought it followed the book pretty close with some smaller stuff adjusted for the movie that didn't really interfere with the main plotline.

Got to see the movie late last night...Overall it had great production value, down to better looking apparating and fight scenes. I thought they did a great job of following the book barring a few minor adjustments

Spoiler

I thought the acting was solid. Bellatrix was truly crazy and really did a great job. Even Emma Watson who isn't the strongest actor did a great job and it was painful to listen to her get cut.

My wife kept commenting on how dark and sad the movie was which I was pleased about...This is not meant to be a happy book, especially this part.

They made a few edits that were odd such as the snake fight, but nothing that I think was detrimental to the movie.

I do think what has hurt them a bit was their lack of explanation in previous books.

For example, if they had explained in previous books what the mirror was, it would have helped people to understand its significance. They could even have put a one line in that let you think Harry thought it was Dumbledore.

Overall though, I am very happy and can't wait until part 2.

2 things I would have left in...

The first being the aforementioned argument between Harry and Lupin...

Secondly (and pretty small too really), but why not leave in Harry and Dudleys good bye??? It's the last time you'll see the Dursleys, so why not show Dudleys other side?

I agree that they should have put the goodbye with the Dursleys from the book in the movie.

Also, not once that I can recall did Dumbledore, or anyone, ever tell Harry that he owns Grimmauld Place, that he inherited it from Siriou. Knowing that would have helped explain how he was able to order Kreacher around.

**********SPOILERS**********

Did anyone else think the part after the locket opens up right before Ron destroys it was a little raunchy for kids??? (The part where Harry And Hermione were macking down)

I had no problem with it personally, but I can see it a bit too much for parents with young children there... especially since H & H were nude
