Messaged you, but essentially a very large product that a good chunk of universities use was hacked and while they patched it, the ransom demand to release info is today

I read about a Canvas hack last week on cnn.com. I'm assuming that's what JMac is talking about. According to this article, the ransom was paid.

EDIT - After reading a few articles, I've come to the conclusion that Canvas is completely compromised. I've been out of academia since 2013, but there has to be an alternative out there.

They were in possession of names, email addresses, student ID numbers, and private messages for 275 million users across 8,800 schools. I'd consider that leverage.

Canvas' parent company paid them a ransom. The software is still apparently completely compromised. I don't see how any customer wouldn't make it a top priority to get off of that product.

I doubt many jump ship. It takes 1-2 years or more to effectively change LMS systems for large schools. And not to count how expensive it is to change.

And a lot of institutions use Canvas. I think it's got the biggest market share of any LMS.

Moodle has the world's largest share but is only 3rd in the US. Canvas is the most widely used in our country. I've been reading today.

- Decided that I wanted to go to the beach. So I'm flying to the beach for a day before my girls trip to Dripping Springs.

When that happened to the city of Dallas a few years ago, I learned that paying the ransom was a big no-no.

it was bad. I don't think they were able to get more than the personal details of about 500 people but the effect was pretty severe. It shut down the municipal court system for awhile. Even after everything was supposed to be fixed/up and running it took forever to unwind the scheduling mess it created.
