I thought all the stuff with Johnny Gaudreau was really poignant, how they made him a jersey and had it with them in the games, but when they brought his kids out to be in the gold medal photo…I'm not ashamed to admit I shed a couple of tears.

Forgive me because I don't know much beyond what was mentioned in the broadcast. What was his connection to the team? I know he was killed by a drunk driver in 2024 (I remember hearing about it at the time) but that's about it. Was he officially part of the team or just friends with the players.

It was certainly a nice tribute to him.

Gaudreau was on the 2024 World Championship roster. Although that competition was less prestigious and the team was not exclusively composed of NHL players, on the basis of his two top five finishes in league MVP voting, it is highly likely that he would have been on this team.

Gaudreau died before the rosters for the 2025 Four Nations tournament (and obviously the Olympic team) were announced.

I wonder who they will have light the Olympic flame? I would like see one of the heroes of the 1984 Games get to do it (Carl Lewis? I presume Mary Lou Retton's alcohol related legal issues will be disqualifying).

My guess would be Phelps and Simone Biles, since it seems like they want a male and female athlete.

Jack Hughes made himself an instant legend. Gets his teeth knocked out and a few minutes later back on the ice and scores the golden goal. Dude…

Daughter and were discussing. He should get an implant that...

- is shaped like a gold medal
- or is like a tooth but with the Olympic Rings carved in it
- or is a a tooth with an upside - down Maple Leaf

This camera view from behind the skier is awesome. Shows how insanely fast they are going.

You like the view from behind the men's downhill?

I'd love to see Michael Johnson. Lewis' legacy is tainted, imo.
Biles will absolutely be involved. Probably Johnny Weir too, even tho he's a skater.

How do you think the voting works for who gets to carry the flag in the closing ceremony? I'd think any straight up 1:1 vote would heavily favor athletes on teams, which would definitely have been Connor Hellebuyck this year.

Although, I guess it would almost have to be decided before the games.

I'm not typically a big figure skating fan, but the end of competition Gala the other night was pretty fun. The men's gold medal winner from Kazakhstan skated to a medley of music from the movie Kung Fu Panda while wearing and full size panda mascot costume. At one point he "fought" two other skaters dressed as Deadpool and Sub Zero from Mortal Combat. He also managed to land a triple even though the panda head left him with no peripheral vision.

It was incredible.

Eileen Gu accepting $20MM to compete on behalf of the ChiComs might be one of the most ironically capitalist things I have seen.

Beat me to it.

Lindsey Vonn has a video out today where she describes her injuries and what the surgery entails. Pretty gruesome. She is probably lucky to be alive.

Johnny Weir has matured a lot, and if you listen to the commentary during the competition they guy is an encyclopedia of skating. I appreciate what he brings to the Olympics coverage. But if he went near that cauldron there would be a conflagration.

Are you referencing the drug tests from the 1988 Trials?

I don't have much doubt that Lewis (and every other prominent sprinter/jumper of his era) was on steroids, but that's solely based on speculation and "reasonable inference". What he tested positive for was Sudafed and other decongestants at levels that were highly unlikely to have any impact on performance.
