Nothing wrong with the first option as long as you're okay with Tech or OU or whatever. They all have a Chili's.

My kid did PSA, and he'll be dunking his Aggie ring soon.


This! Kids get into A&M all kinds of different ways these days. The goal is to get the Aggie ring, not get accepted. My nephew did 2 years at Blinn, transferred into CoSci and now has an Aggie ring and degree.

We met with several counselors on our trips over there. General observation is that the smaller departments are hungrier for warm bodies, will give you a harder sell, and will present strategies for navigating the admissions process. We had one tell us that if given the opportunity for Team Blinn or PSA, take Team Blinn. PSA is treated like a contract, and one little slip will mean your Wannabe Aggie get stuck somewhere they had not planned on. That said, I have no first-hand experience with either.

His intent might have been to be snide, but it's a valid question. It's honorable work.

Being in California , with the current state of LA after the fires, good skilled tradesmen and women are going to be in high demand for all the rebuilding that will be going on for the next several years.

Highly skilled trades people can make a lot of money without the expense of college. And can be making a high salary much quicker than a college graduate might l, depending on their degree and job field.

I wouldn't say A&M is "ruined" but the Sharp years have brought some cultural decline. For people complaining about wokeness at A&M, where are you going to send your kids that is less woke and not a step down in academic stature? Tiny Hillsdale College can't handle thousands of disappointed A&M applicants.

You'll be hoping in vain. People will always care where you went to college because colleges are wildly variable. A degree from Texas Southern isn't a substitute for a degree from A&M, which isn't a substitute for a degree from Caltech.

My advice is to take the offer. Complete the requirements and transfer to main campus. Go on with life without having the regret of not being an Aggie / having an Aggie ring.

TAMU Galveston is the most likely path if he really wants to make it happen at A&M. I think it could be a good option, but I'm not sure it's as good as his other options where he'd be at the same Uni all 4 years.

PSA option doesn't work for him as no eng option there.

My daughter is with Maritime Academy at TAMUG. She tells me that admittance applications are open until May 1. Also, it is possible to get into one of engineering programs without doing a year or two of general engineering. I think she said transfer to the College Station campus is fairly easy.

I must say, I wish our other system schools were a little more attractive. None of them are a very close second choice, especially since Galveston is considered part of the main flagship. Really, there is only one public university (A&M) and a couple private universities (Rice and maybe SMU) in Texas that I would consider attending, then the other options would all be out of state. We ought to have more attractive options than that in such a large state. Texas State and Tech need to get off their lazy, party school asses and become schools where serious students might want to attend. We wouldn't have to send so many thousands of kids out of state if they would shape up.

OP- I've heard that it isn't possible to do PSA for engineering. I suggest calling the engineering department. Have you considered having him do a year or two at Galveston and then transferring? I've been told Galveston is the easiest way to transfer into engineering. Or you could consider one of the A&M engineering academies at sever community colleges around the state. Classes are taught by Aggie profs.

It is possible, my son was PSA for Engineering. Just not every system school has engineering, or even the engineering major you might want. My son applied for industrial engineering, and when he chose Tarleton for his system school, he was put in their industrial technology major.

Just saying that if the reputation of the school you attend is a deciding factor in wanting ur kid to go somewhere then A&M might not be the best choice.

You gotta factor in the lag time from changes in education quality to when employers start to see the changes and make their shift away from recruiting there for their new hires.

So trying to predict how a&m's downside is going to look in 5 years when ur kid graduates is difficult to do. The Aggie network diminishes the risk but the risk is still there.

With A&M's stubborn fixation and attempts to subvert the DEI bans in the state of Texas, it could become a college where only heavily DEI minded companies go to recruit.

If that's the case and your kid is a white male, good luck parlaying that degree into a career worth anything.

The question is whether or not its a 100k bet ur willing to make on ur kid's future.

Just something that I would consider.

It is a no brainer and if he joins the Maritime program down there I believe he will get in state tuition, but that doesn't mean he has to stick with that program. The Marine Engineering program mirrors mechanical engineering in a lot of ways. If he does stick with MARE, he will have a 6 figure job out of school with 6 months off a year and it is easily transferrable to shore aide power management type jobs.

You're mixing up degrees. Marine Engineering at A&M is only Marine Engineering Technology which does not mirror Mechanical Engineering but does have lots in common with Mechanical Engineering Technology. Now, there is Ocean Engineering which does overlap a lot with Mechanical Engineering.

Mechanical Engineering is to Mechanical Engineering Technology like a physician is to a physician assistant. Nothing wrong at all with ME Technology and people have great careers with it but ME and ME Technology are not the same thing.

Send him to McAllen. He can stay there for four years and get an aggie ring and engineering degree or "Students who begin their studies in McAllen have the option to transition to our Galveston or College Station campuses through the entry-to-a-major process."

You're correct and idk why I always mix those two up. Point still stands about TAMUG though, there's a wealth of opportunity there, whether that's MARE or waiting on a transfer to main campus.
