A blessing to all involved
Tipping is encouraging laziness. Don't give it a religious color. If you want to donate, give your money to orphans. Not to some 20 year old who will blow it up on weed.

On 2nd thought, maybe it works to my benefit.
You all go ahead and throw in 30% tip and keep prices low. I pay a tip of 15% or lower and I get both low prices in restaurants AND give a low tip.
I really don't know why I am fighting the battle that is to my disadvantage. Go ahead and pay HUGE tips. Lower prices for me.

People on this board have assured me weed is an unmitigated good with 0 downside and I bet you drink caffeine which kills more people than weed and weed was made illegal to protect the alcohol companies which are the real poisons, man. I'm not addicted, I just need it everyday to sleep with unrestricted access, it's just a plant.
Wouldn't the restaurant have to charge more for the food they serve if they had to pay the wait staff more? Seems like you have to pay either way. At least with tipping you can reward good service and penalize bad.BonfireNerd04 said:
I agree with OP. Tipping is a scam by the restaurant industry to guilt-trip customers into paying their workers so they don't have to.
It also reinforces a social bias that customer-facing jobs are more important than behind-the-scenes people. Why don't the cooks get tips?
And the system has gotten even worse in recent years as payment terminals are configured to prompt for tips even at restaurants that don't have waiters and hand your food over the counter.
This is one issue on which the US needs to follow the rest of the world's lead. Abolish the subminimum wage. Pay waiters by the hour like everyone else. Make tipping an optional reward for exceptionally good service.

A pizza delivery woman in Florida is accused of stabbing an unknowingly pregnant woman multiple times over a bad tip, according to an Osceola County Sheriff's Office affidavit.
Brianna Alvelo, 22, was charged with attempted murder, home invasion with a firearm, kidnapping and aggravated assault in relation to the alleged incident, court records stated. A man who accompanied Alvelo during the alleged stabbing hasn't yet been publicly identified.
The victim, her boyfriend and her 5-year-old daughter were staying at a motel in Kissimmee and celebrating a birthday when they ordered from Marco's Pizza on Sunday (December 22), according to the affidavit, which is based on the woman's interview with the Osceola County Sheriff's Office. The pizza reportedly cost about $33 and the woman asked for change for a $50 bill.
Alvelo didn't have change and the woman searched for smaller bills, allegedly giving the driver only a $2 tip. The woman told police that she heard a loud knocking on the door sometime after initially interacting with Alvelo, at which point a man and a woman wearing all black, including face masks, allegedly barged into the room when she opened the door.
The man allegedly pulled out a silver revolver and demanded the woman's boyfriend go into the bathroom at which point the other person, suspected to be Alvelo, pulled out a pocket knife. Alvelo then looked through the woman's purse and broke the victim's daughter's Nintendo Switch.
The victim said she turned away to shield her child, at which point she was stabbed in her lower back. The woman then "threw her daughter onto the bed and attempted to pick up her phone," at which point Alvelo allegedly grabbed and smashed it and "began striking her multiple times with the knife."
The man who allegedly had the gun then yelled at the second person that it was time to go, ending the assault, according to the affidavit. The victim was reportedly stabbed 14 times, which included suffering wounds to her chest, arms, legs and abdomen.
The woman reportedly discovered she was pregnant while receiving treatment at a nearby hospital. Alvelo is being held on a $55,000 bail at the Osceola County Jail, with prosecutors requesting she be held without bond during her initial court appearance, claiming the incident was a "punishable by life offense."

The tipping on a percentage thing is stupid though.
Why should the waiter get more money because I ordered a steak? Or less if I ordered the chicken breast?
They performed the exact same service in either case.

Tipping is simply a way for employers to get customers to offset part of the cost of having employees. It's not for the server.
Minimum wage in Texas is $7.25 an hour. Employers get to pay servers $2.13 an hour and then count tips towards meeting the minimum wage. If we all quit tipping, employers would just have to pay $7.25 an hour.
Fact is - too many of you like tipping and feeling like the big spender for throwing out that extra $1 bill. Well, enjoy the little nubber that gives you, but it doesn't do anything for the server. At the end of the night, they still just get $7.25 an hour.
So when they flip that pad around and it starts at 18% - just select custom tip and make it 0. And stare right at the server the whole time you do it. You're doing society a big favor by getting rid of this antiquated, dumb practice.

Exactly. If tipping is replaced by paying waiters higher wages, you are still going to be paying for it because the cost of meals will go way up, plus there will be no motivation for the waiter to put in any effort since they will be paid the same no matter what

I waited tables to pay my way through college and grad school. Not a dime of that went to drugs.
