Tipping is simply a way for employers to get customers to offset part of the cost of having employees. It's not for the server.

Minimum wage in Texas is $7.25 an hour. Employers get to pay servers $2.13 an hour and then count tips towards meeting the minimum wage. If we all quit tipping, employers would just have to pay $7.25 an hour.

Fact is - too many of you like tipping and feeling like the big spender for throwing out that extra $1 bill. Well, enjoy the little nubber that gives you, but it doesn't do anything for the server. At the end of the night, they still just get $7.25 an hour.

So when they flip that pad around and it starts at 18% - just select custom tip and make it 0. And stare right at the server the whole time you do it. You're doing society a big favor by getting rid of this antiquated, dumb practice.

I agree with you.

Many of the lolpoors here do blue-collar hourly jobs but like to boast about throwing down massive tips. Either they are lying or just being foolish wasting their money. To counter that, they come here and try to shame people who are against the tipping culture.

Then the same closet-socialists then cry that the wait staff need the tips "to survive".

Fat and stupid Americans really do know how to waste their money, and go on welfare.

I pay them 12.75 an hour plus the tip pool.

If tipping stops the people most upset will be servers. They will make less.

Dining out will look more expensive and people will do less.

And service will suffer. Having traveled many places where tipping isn't practiced, the service decline is steep - and I'm not even picky about service.

Waiters make WAY more money on tips than they would making minimum wage. Why don't you talk to a real-life person who actually works in the industry before promulgating your stupid ideas?

If tipping stopped, menu prices would go up 20% pretty much across the board. Nobody would want the job for minimum wage. Restaurants would probably be paying $18+ per hour. That labor cost would still be passed on to you

Tell me about the typical server's number of productive hours they work in a typical week. Seems to me to be a tough way to generate a good weekly income. I realize that this varies greatly from pricey upscale restaurants to the typical place.

Why is this anyone's problem? If a waiter makes less money, he/she should quit and get a better job. That is what this board preaches all the time when it comes to CEOs and corporations. Now the rules are different?

If waiters get other jobs or go to restaurants who pay them more, then restaurants will be forced to improve their processes or go out of business. That will cause the survivors to be better managed.

I'm not sure I've seen anyone at any level of society brag about how much they tip

No one brags out loud. But they do it in subtle ways in a group to show off. Of course, when they are on their own they probably tip the minimum.

That is preferable. At least you know what you are paying and that isn't a guessing game. The bad restaurants would go out of business like they deserve.

On 2nd thought, maybe it works to my benefit.

You all go ahead and throw in 30% tip and keep prices low. I pay a tip of 15% or lower and I get both low prices in restaurants AND give a low tip.

Win-win.

That is one of the reasons why I love this country. Lots of suckers who love giving their money away to show off or to make some stupid point. If you are smart, you can become rich at someone else's expense and without breaking the law.

I really don't know why I am fighting the battle that is to my disadvantage. Go ahead and pay HUGE tips. Lower prices for me.

I waited tables to pay my way through college and grad school. Not a dime of that went to drugs.
