Same with the "output" end of the x-ray conveyer belt. We all go through the metal detector in a specific order and the bags are going to come through in the same order. Yet there is always some moron who runs up and stands there blocking everything, as if their bag grew legs and jumped a few places while in the machine.
I was going to mention this one too. Makes me crazy.

On the food part, people rarely if ever get something that is light and not messy like a salad or a cold sandwich. It is always greasy fried chicken or Mexican food or some sort pasta dish or cheeseburger with extra onions. No common sense or consideration.

I remember being on a regional flight out of Lafayette, LA and they had a ton of trouble trying to get the door securely closed while we were at the gate....after about 30 minutes of messing around with it and finally locking us all in the tiny metal tube, this dude cracks open a tuna sandwich chock full of huge raw onion chunks and just goes to town on it. Just stinks up the whole cabin immediately. He sat there and acted like no big deal, headphones on and everything. Half the plane was ready to tie this guy up and throw him in the swamp.

Learn how to properly stow your luggage in the overhead compartment. It varies by make and model but people (who are dumb) love to gently place 2 carry-ons flat down, head to toe style and then complain there's no more room when you could easily fit 2 or more bags up there, assuming it's a mainline sized plane.

This rule is more difficult on a CRJ plane or the smaller ERJs. Your fellow travelers would like to think there are no rules but they are wrong and cannot be trusted. Do not make eye contact but protect your (and your luggage's) ground.
I'm the guy people love to hate when I fly with one of my trombones. A trombone case usually takes up 1/2 to 2/3 of an overhead bin with a little space in front of it for purses or backpacks. People see me waiting to board and they are already giving me daggers from the eyes.

Why do you travel with a trombone?
I'm a professional musician.

That's awesome. But how often does being a professional trombonist require you to travel by air? I get it if you're in a Ska band with a decent record deal or you're based out of Nashville with a bunch of contacts. Otherwise it seems like that would be a localized gig.

If you're in Row 25, don't stow your carryon bag up in the front of the plane causing that person to have to put their bag further back and wait for everyone to deplane before they can retrieve theirs.

I travel to play a couple times a year, but it's also not unusual for me to take my horn with me to practice if I'm going to be traveling for more than a few days.

I disagree with #10.

I'm the a-hole who stands up in the aisle to prevent the mouth breathers behind me from trying to bypass the system and violate the social contract of exiting by row.. I'm not going to try to exit before the row in front of me, and if I have any say in it the people behind me aren't either.

The only exception is if the plane is late and they announce that there might be some people trying to catch a connecting flight. Other than that, sorry, not sorry, but I'm not moving so others can break the unwritten rules of air travel.

If your trombone is that big, I'm guessing it exceeds the standard 22" most airlines list as the max length for carry-ons. (Southwest is more generous with 24").

Therefore, it should be checked baggage. If you're that worried about damage, invest in a better travel case.

So, an additional rule: don't bring carry-ons that exceed the listed dimensions for carry-on bags.

Do you want me to give you a copy of the FAA rules ((914 CFR Part 251 docket No. DOT-OST-2014-12361] RIN 2105-AE37)?

Musical instruments are a standard exception to carry-on size restrictions primarily due to their value.

20. If you are short, don't take the seats that have extra legroom such as emergency exit row seats. Tall people will thank you.
So the greatest civilization is one where all citizens are equally armed and can only be persuaded, never forced. It removes force from the equation... and that's why carrying a gun is a civilized act.

When approaching security, know "the drill." If you have pre check, put everything that will trigger a metal detector in your bag and keep your shoes on. Not hard.

If I am in the aisle seat, I'll sometimes get up when we reach the gate because my back is killing me and I'm 6'5". But I don't try to walk ahead, that drives me crazy. Like, we're all sitting here for awhile, trying to get out 3 people sooner isn't going to mean much.
6'6" so I'm in the same boat. Need to stretch my legs for my sanity. No harm no foul as long as you don't try to fain ground. And hell yea on #6. Nothing worse than dealing with someone's BO for multiple hours.

I wish everyone followed these common sense rules.

One of my irritants back at the airport is the people that crowd the baggage carousel. I'll leave space for people to step in front of me to grab their bags in case they come out before me and then some bonehead will come stand directly in front of me while they wait for their bag (which inevitably comes out after mine).

Take a step back, give everyone space to fetch their stuff.

"Hey, can I squeak past you to get to the bathroom?"
"Can I fingerbang you beneath this blanket?"

Really the point is to keep your hands (and bare feet) to yourself. Unless you've asked someone if you can lay your head on their shoulder and they've said yes, don't. Don't hog the arm rest to the point that your elbows are crowding the person beside you.

I always give the Flight attendants a $5 Starbucks gift card when I board. 4 is usually enough for most flights. It's just something nice to do for a group that has o put up with a lot of **** from awful people on a regular basis. And if you are sitting economy, they might upgrade you.

787s has 8-10 but they are broken up by zones.
747 is a crew of 4
737-700=3 FA
737-800=4 FA
737-900=5 FA

I counted this as being mindful if you're more generously portioned. I am not a small mammal but I was always trying to squish myself into the window to maintain proper spacial integrity. Even then, it's hard for middle seat to put their half eaten onion fart souffle under the seat in front of them if my caveman legs are in a normal position in front of my own seat. It's that cramped in coach and I can't blame anyone for not being able to hairpin-turn themselves into position to access under the seat in front of them.

Man cut the long line up to TSA until he got to me. He was telling everyone that he was late and was going to miss his flight, so everyone just let him go in front of them. I told him everyone has somewhere to be so get behind me. He was furious and yapped behind my back for a while. Finally the guy in front of me turned around and said " are you special or something?"

Dude, never would let it die that I would not allow him to cut the line

100% this. I will lift the aisle armrest and swing my legs out into the aisle as soon as the seatbelt sign is off just to thwart those aholes. Nothing tickles my dark heart more beautifully than to have some hot rod who jumped up and ran towards the front have to stop and glare at me and my legs in the aisle for 5-10 minutes waiting for the rows in front of us to unload.

OP missed several key points.

First, learn how to gently seat yourself. I'm tired of Coke Zero lap cuz some dude drops in like a wrestler from the top of the ropes.

Similarly, learn how to smoothly recline your seat.

And, being an aisle rider, manage your fluid intake/outtake prior to buckling up if you're middle or window.

Million mile flyer here, most of those are spot on.

I'm a lefty and I try to always get on A seat (left window) and I can lean against that side to sleep also. I try my best to avoid having to get up and disturb the other guys and when I do, I try it to be early on a long flight.

  • I HATE it when people facetime or listen to their phones without ear plugs/headphones, they have no common courtesy.
  • If you are coughing a lot, wear a GD mask! I don't care if it only helps 1%, I'll take that 1% to avoid getting what you have.
  • For the love of god, close the window shade when we are at cruising level, all you are gonna see is clouds and it creates a healluva glare on screens for the rest of us.
    • For anyone who flies a lot international, most airlines make you open them for departure and arrival, I don't get it, why?
  • If you have to ask help for put your bags in the overhead, they are too heavy, check that bag.
  • This is mainly on 737 in first class, but it has three foot rest areas, one big one (I think window?) and two smaller ones for the aisle. If you are window, don't try to take your main one and then my little one. I had some %itch from new jersy complain to the stewards that I wouldn't move my bag and shoes out of my foot storage area. Fun times.
  • When I am in the aisle seat, I'm with the guy who stands up to keep people from behind me rushing out. You wait your turn.
  • I almost always wear some cheap slides and socks (fresh with foot powder). I am always shocked at people barefoot on planes, yuck.
  • I don't get how the backpackers are allowed to take up almost an entire overhead bin, can those things not be checked? Or gate checked?
