People Travelling with Nut Allergies

"Airborne" nut allergies are BS. I get these patients in the ER claiming this all the time. I once had one claiming just passing peanut butter jars in the aisle at a grocery store caused them to have anaphylaxis…she did not have anaphylaxis. The individuals claiming these type of reactions tend to have a lot of psychiatric comorbid conditions, the most prominent being anxiety.

I am amazed at the lack of basic human decency in the world sometimes. Some of you weren't taught the golden rule as children and it shows.

Pee unto others as you would have them pee unto you?

I know someone who has a severe nut allergy. If you have a packet of sealed trail mix in your backpack and he is in the same room, he can sense it. He won't have a severe reaction, but there is enough of some reaction that allows him to know there's something within his proximity. (I've seen this in action twice.)

If he were in an enclosed space like an airplane and someone a few rows back opened that packet, he might have a life threatening reaction.

I don't know what the right answer is, here. There's doing things within your rights, and then there's doing what's right. Sometimes these aren't the same thing.

The allergens from nuts do not aerosolize. They've done actual studies on children with severe nut allergies in enclosed environments and demonstrated none even had moderate reactions.

Nevertheless, I'm on board with preventing things that might cause someone to have a panic attack, and given people with severe nut allergies have a legitimate reason to develop anxiety around nuts, I think it's best practice to acquiesce to their requests

I believe in science and legitimate research - not that I've read those studies, but I don't see a reason why you'd make something like that up.

And, I have no explanation for how my friend knew that there were nuts in the room. In my experience, it's not a regular question he asks when he walks into a room.

Lastly, it does not inconvenience me to refrain from eating nuts if someone asks me not to, regardless of the reason. My sister hates the smell of tuna, so I just wait until she's not around to eat tuna. Not a big deal.

It usually isn't.

Unless you have a gluten free child.
I don't think these kids should be super exposed, but so much of the gf life is based on nuts and nut flours.

I think a nut free table in the cafeteria is a good thing. But banning peanut butter from the entire school is not good for kids eating off WIC and food stamps.

I hated that my son could not have P3s or nut crackers at school, just in case.

Because cheetos are so healthy.

Yes, they need to not consume nuts.
But pb sandwiches are staples for kids who aren't trust fund babies.

I agree that that's a different situation than refraining for a few hours-long flight.

But the allergy isn't airborne

So. Do we acquiesce because they freak if they think there are peanuts?

Maybe we should.
But these people need to realize the reality that smelling peanuts doesn't kill them

Of course you are.

It's totally indecent of other people to expect someone to first protect themselves from something possibly fatal to them with very reasonable measures vs. having everyone else cater to them with very unreasonable measures.

I believe we played this experiment out on a large scale around March 2020.

If you have a nut allergy on a flight and you're asking others nearby to refrain from consuming them on the flight, yes, it makes sense for you to first take measures to protect yourself. If that's a mask, then put on a mask.

I didn't argue about that.

The question unaddressed is whether a N95 mask will filter out the allergens. I guess since we discovered that the allergens are not airborne this doesn't matter. However, if the mask being able to filter out the bad stuff would set the crazies at ease, it should be discussed as a solution to this issue.

This is ridiculous.

The FA was just asking you to be aware. If I brought a packet of nuts, I would just keep them for later to avoid a situation in the sky. You even said someone opened a packet of nuts. No one punished them.

My kids are allergic to nuts, we carry Epi pens and I am a physician. We try to control what we can for ourselves. One time, we were on a flight and a young kid opened some nuts his parents gave him. The kid started wiping his hands all over the chair near my son, dropped some nuts, etc. He wasn't doing anything out of the ordinary for a young kid, but if the FA asked people to be mindful beforehand it might have made a difference. I have never asked a FA to make that announcement for us, but I would never fault a parent trying to protect their kid.

I have a tree nut allergy, so not same as peanut allergy. I just cant eat the nuts or it is moderately bad news most of the time, but can be around them just fine, as everyone else with a tree nut allergy. So the guy on the plane mentioned his almonds, that will literally affect no one, unless he shoved them in my mouth. Haha. But United serves that nut bowl in first class, but i dont believe it has peanuts, I dont touch it and just politely decline them when I get upgraded, but I believe it is just almonds and cashews etc.

They announce nuts (and no longer serve them like the good ol' days) and yet airlines let people bring animals on board and sit wherever they want.

I get it's typically not a death risk, but dander IS airborne and negatively affects a lot more of the population..

I'm a tall person and economy seats don't provide me with enough room to be comfortable but I don't expect others around me to make their travel worse to accommodate me by not reclining their chair or something, I just deal with it. Like an allergy, it's not something that I can do anything about.
but will not being comfortable kill you?
Well, theoretically having my legs in a cramped position could reduce blood flow and cause a circulatory issue leading to a traumatic event. That's highly unlikely on a four-hour flight, but it is possible.
you could also easily remedy that by getting an aisle seat, or pay more for econ+ or first.

Nut allergy guy's only option is to just not fly, which may not be practical.

But make no mistake, I don't think we have room in the world for people with these severe nut allergies. That **** needs to be bred out. Like that one guy says, if eating a nut can kill you, maybe you are supposed to die.

Wife and I made sure to shove peanut butter down our kids throat early as possible to avoid this. meanwhile we hear other parents not giving their kids PB because 'they might be allergic!'

Morons.

Had a boss at a past job who grew up with no nut allergies. Then about 10 years ago (when he was far into his mid 40's) developed a nut allergy out of thin air.

Sometimes it's not within their control.

I thought that some peanut allergies were actually due to aflatoxin, whose spores could be airborne. That would be concerning more than contact with the peanuts.

Second post about hot guy or looking for one. Seems something is lacking.

And no, I'm not stalking as your posts are the first ones up on two consecutive threads I have the little blue circle with new posts on threads I've posted on. Also, I'm too old for you (and more importantly, married)

Edit: but fwiw I've been told my entire life I'm a "hot guy" lol
