EBITDA. The C suite types get off on that acronym I swear.

I agree with the distaste for heavy dependence on acronyms.

But I support the use of EBITDA because the alternative is earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization which is a lot more to say.
This EBITDA is universal financial metric that every company is measured on. No avoiding that one.

Here's one I see not only in the corporate world, but literally everywhere now: on the news, in casual conversation, on internet forums, etc.

"We have the receipts."

Just stop it.

We are a "family" here and enjoy spending time together after work.

Translation: we will make you cancel all of your vacation plans, you will have to work late and miss your kids' games, and you will be pressured to go to company happy hours while on family time.

Some favorites from our Ops teams weekly excuse-making calls

Laser Focused = we suck at this, and we're going to keep giving margin away by doing the same thing over and over again

Control what we can control = Stop asking me to answer for actual results

And my personal favorite, "Opportunities"
Nothing is a problem, only an opportunity. In usage:

"We had an opportunity this week where a store manager screamed at a customer and quit while cussing out the staff"

"We're working to resolve the opportunity where we sent 30 review requests to all 200,000 individuals on our customer roll."

It's like the Jocko GOOD concept as interpreted by a first year business student.

Haha. Reminds me of a situation from many years ago when I found the root cause and then fixed a software bug in an embedded product.

After testing my fix, I was walking back from the lab to my desk and I passed the project manager. I relayed to him that I tests were successful and the fix was valid.

He said:

"So, we're realizing opportunities."

I said:

"I don't know what that means, but I fixed the bug."

Does it mean that, "everything I am about to say is BS, but you will be expected to regurgitate it upon demand"?

Yeah, "pencils down" is a sensible analogy to me. I use it often when my team needs to stop work on a project when it's out of our control.
