My sister and I are both in our 50s. We decided about 15 years ago to stop exchanging Christmas gifts with each other and just give gifts to each others kids. All we'd been buying each other for years at that point was gift cards. so I was happy when she proposed it. A few years ago, she started sending me gifts again (a single gift each year).

I opened my present this morning and there were nice floor mats for my new car. However, my car came with carpeted mats from Nissan with the model of the car stitched into them. I'm not replacing what I have with this:

She clearly spent money, and now I'm feeling terribly guilty about not liking a gift that I didn't ask for. I've texted a couple of friends, but if no one wants these, I'm going to wind up leaving them out by the dumpster for a stranger.

If you have an agreement not to exchange present w/someone, I'd recommend sticking with it.

My brother and I realized that we both already bought the things we wanted throughout the year and did care about gifts as much as spending time together. So we buy each other beer to drink at Christmas and the rule is you have to enjoy at least one together before life takes back over and schedules get busy again.

I got my brother a $100 gift card to total wine and he got me a $100 gift card to Academy. Seeing as we both shop at both places...what's the point really? LOL

I don't buy gifts for anyone outside of my house.

It's psychological. You really do care less about spending windfall/gift money than you do money that you know has been earned by your own effort, even though it is completely fungible. It's "not in the plan" so ii is psychologically easier to spend it in a more enjoyable and carefree fashion, so even exchanging gift cards matters a bit as gift giving.

I take the carpet mats out and store them in the garage where they remain in pristine condition. Then I use mats similar to those. They tale all the abuse and the carpet underneath stays pretty clean. When I go to sell the car, put in the pristine carpet mats and the car looks brand new... assuming youve done routine cleaning and maintenance.

I send my sister and her family a food/wine gift basket. They live far away and I don't see them most years.

My brother and I spend a few days camping or some other activity. I get him some kind of gear or apparel for that.

At least you get ****

I have a couple stepsiblings, both married and both homeowners, who I have given Christmas gifts every year and this year was the first time I've ever received anything from either.

I got a few packs of trader Joe's chocolate from one of them. I likely spent more on their card but at least I got something for once you freaking heartless ahole stepsiblings
