Giving out my year end bonuses next Friday at our ChristmaHannaKwaanzakuh party. One of my favorite events of the year. Looking forward to it. Checks have been received from HR, stocking stuffers purchased. Now just waiting on my "Hookers and Blow Save Christmas" books to come in from Amazon to add to the merriment. And, of course, the decision as to whether or not to dress up as Santa for the party. I've already done The Grinch a couple of times, been a good while since I donned the Santa outfit.

We don't have bonuses per se, but I'm a couple of days out from closing a deal big enough to make my commission way higher than my salary this year.

I'm sure I'll be sweating bullets on 12/31 waiting for signatures to come through.

Many if not most of the highest compensation jobs in the country have higher bonus income than salary.

No they don't
Youre an idiot. Anyone in high finance who is mid-career or above is often making more in bonus than their salary.

"Many if not the highest compensation jobs in the country" and you post a link about some investment bankers making half a million bucks? That's cute.

PSA for all the youngbloods - take your own bonus by working half days and zoning out a few hours each day. take some TP home as well.

I know.. wtf does it even mean? My offer letter has sometimes said "the company gives out a bonus of 17%". Then when the year is over, sometimes it is 5% and one time I got about 60% bonus. 17% is meaningless as they use some multiple that moves the amount up and down.
working in construction i've seen bonus language that makes zero sense and bonus payouts that make negative sense.

best i've seen. we had written bonus policy. one year we knock it out within our PM group. 200mm company...owed PMs the following (me PM1 85k owed - 15k paid) (PM2 300k owed - 40k paid) (PM3 50k owed 10k paid) and not sure about PM4. So we all quit within 3 months and the company was less than 100mm the following 3 years according to buddy. It sold 3 years later and the group is non-existent today.

Company i work out now has a guideline that isn't followed. I typically get 20-40% of my salary paid out when i earn less than 20% per the plan. Most of the project management and senior management is 10+ year employees.

We do quarterly bonuses, and after about a year straight of bonuses running around 200+% of the target, this most recent quarter's bonus came in at around 120% of target, and the execs are preparing everyone to expect less over the next 2-3 quarters.

They're just taxed at your marginal tax rate, there's no special "bonus tax"

Thank you, thank you, thank you. This is always so dumb. They are withheld at the top marginal rate and then adjusted as ordinary income at the end of year

The Grinch appreciates the offer but respectfully declines. This Grinch, in particular, isn't interested in anyone with "daddy" in their handle.
Not that there's anything wrong with that - nothing at all - it's just for a different Grinch.

I've got a left wing friend who gets those bonuses and then claims he pays a 35% tax rate...I pointed out to him that he does NOT make several million dollars a year (which would be the only way to get it anywhere near there)...

He somehow never mentions that he gets almost all of it back in his tax refund...

18 years in professional service.

At the time of hiring, I always negotiate my base pay and PTO. Negotiating your bonus or factoring it into your comp is muddying the water as it isn't always consistent or guaranteed. They are often times arbitrary if "performance-based". Companies try to throw it out there to make their offer more attractive. Companies can weasel out of them. They can weasel out if paying you too but then they get a call from the DOL about back wages.

This above applies less if you are a corporate shareholder, but still applies as takeovers are a thing and you can be cut out at any time.

Same. They will finalize the payout factor in January and pay them the first week of March. Everyone has a target bonus % that is multiplied by the factor. Last year it was .53 but this year we are on track for 1.2.

We've always gotten 10-16% depending on management level and payout is based on performance compared to target metrics from the beginning of the year with some consideration given to conditions outside the control of the business.

Payout has been as low as 75% of 10% and as high as 140% of 10% for low level management.

You're one of those people who thinks your bonus is taxed differently than ordinary income?

Edit: sorry, I see you have been raked over the coals already.

It may not be taxed differently in the end, however, it sucks that the fed gov gets an interest free loan of some extra money before giving it back at refund time.

It's better to owe a little than to get a huge refund. I can put that money to better work than the government throughout the year.

That's my point...

When they hit that bonus with the 35% tax rate, then give 90% of it back later, they've ****ed you out of putting that money to better use throughout the year.

That's your fault. Stop overwithholding. I underwithhold every year and get an interest free loan from the government.

I don't get a bonus. I'm not talking about me. I'm talking about how the government taxes bonuses at the 35% rate.

The government doesn't tax bonuses at 35% (unless your effective tax rate is 35%, which would mean you have several million dollars of income). That's the point. Your employer might withhold more of your bonus (although usually you can ask and they will withhold at your normal rate), but if they do withhold more, underwithhold the rest of the year and you won't be giving the government an "interest free loan."

Of course, it's not an interest free loan at all. It's money you affirmatively chose not to be paid when you filled out your W-4
