1. MTA, or taxi. Avoid Uber in Manhattan. It's a hassle

2. Neither. Dial 7 cab. Book yourself a town car for not much more than the cost of a cab to get you from LGA to Manhattan. https://www.dial7.com/

Thanks for your suggestions

Any restaurant recommendations?
Probably any kind of food except Mexican- can't fathom eating Mexican food in New York

PJ Clarke's in midtown east is great. Good ambience, classic old school bar feel

Angelo's next to Carnegie Hall on 57th is some of the best pizza in NYC. Go for the sausage

It's a chain, but the fogo de chao in NYC is the best one I've been to.

1. Subway
2. Taxi

Wander Hell's Kitchen and eat and drink. Thai food is incredible there. Visit museums. Check out the Treasures of the New York Public Library. Central Park is great to wander around. If you have time, the Irish Famine Memorial is down near the 9/11 Memorial and is gorgeous.

The subway is so easy these days.
Google maps will tell you exactly where to go. It will "walk" you to the nearest and correct station and tell you which subway train to take.

If you have a credit card with a "tap" chip you just tap that on the turnstile now. Don't have to buy tickets or get a special subway card.

$2.75 for each time you go through a turnstile

Easy as can be

Oh and watch Ghostbusters, home alone 2, and other movies set in NYC before you go. It is pretty neat to be at the places they were filmed

Agree with all of this. However, just grab an Uber from LaGuardia because the subway line doesn't run that far. Thanks taxi unions.

The answer to all of this is the Metro system. Get the 7 day pass for like $30 bucks. Its incredibly easy to get around using the subway and buses.

This is the best advice.

For as much **** people give the MTA (its often deserved), its still one of the best and most efficient ways to get around the city.
Definitely learn how to hail a cab before you go.
  • Center lights only (just the numbers) means the cab is available for fares
  • step out into the street a bit and stick your handout, no need to waive
  • Don't yell anything. They can't hear you and you'll just look like an idiot.
  • when the cab pulls up hop in first and then tell them your destination.

It's pretty rare but some drivers may pull up and ask you where you are going first. They could be nearing the end of their shift or might not want to go to where you are headed. If you tell them your destination before getting in the cab, they could just drive off. It's a dick move and technically illegal. So I always just get in before telling them the destination. That also saves some time if the traffic is really busy.

Car Service is absolutely the way to get to and from the airport, especially if you have really early or late flights. No waiting in a cab line and the quality and service is better than an Uber with no peak pricing BS.

There are endless places to get good food and drink. Anyone's recommendation is most likely going to serve you well. Katz is still worth the hype IMO and worth it if you want a giant sandwich and some history as well. They have a specific ordering system so check it out before you go (don't lose you ticket!).

If you are a history buff, I think a trip to Fraunces Tavern should be on your list. It's a true tavern and a pre revolutionary war watering hole. Basically the place to be if you were down with the founding fathers. Washington even gave his farewell address to his army command in this bar.

If you find yourself in Chinatown, walk a block north of the Canal St station at Canal and Lafayette. There you'll find Cortlandt Alley, likely the most famous place you never realized you've seen before. NYC is always portrayed in TV and movies as having a bunch of dark and dangerous alleys. Truth is there are like less then 10 and Cortlandt is the most well known because it's privately owned. That means they can shut it down for filming whenever they need to. If you've seen a NYC alley on tv or in a movie, chances are it s Cortlandt. There is a even possibility they could be filming when you walk by. Law and Order uses it a lot.

Subway or uber, depending on how much time you have to plan for your arrival. If you use uber, pay the $2 or $3 extra for Uber comfort. the Uberx fleet up there are a bunch of dirty old small suv's and sedans that basically are just a repurposed taxi fleet

Blade service is much easier to come by from JFK. They list LGA on their website but I don't think they have many scheduled flights.

Airports into Manhattan are the worst aspect of getting around the city. I usually take an Uber, but the recommended towncar service (or if you google and find another one) may be a good deal.

Subway is generally the best, when its not convenient I compare Uber and Lyft. Depending on what credit cards you have, discounts may be available (AMEX Plat for Uber, Chase Sapphire products for Lyft).

Asking for restaurant recommendations in NYC is like asking for vacation idea on planet Earth. There is so much good food in NYC that is a very difficult question to answer helpfully, but I will give a run down of some of my favorites recently:

  • John's of Bleeker Street. Get there near when it opens. Great pizza, have to order a whole pie though
  • Joe's Pizza. Lots of locations. My favorite slice.
  • Lucali in Brooklyn. Have to plan for getting a table and its a sit down type place, but its great pizza as well
  • Crown Shy - Michelin Starred, former chefs from Eleven Madison Park before it went down hill. Really good food.
  • L'Artusi - can be hard to get a table but really good Italian spot in the West Village. Olive Oil Cake is bomb. Decent chance of seeing a celebrity
  • Temple Court - moody, dimly lit cocktail spot. Great place for pre or after dinner drinks
  • Via Carota - Iconic Italian spot that takes very few reservations and tends to have a long wait. If you get a table, it will be a good meal and you might be seated next to someone famous
  • The Bowery Hotel - I like staying there, its a cool neighborhood. If it doesn't work as a place to stay, the bar is a very cool vibe and worth stopping by if you're in the area.
  • Stone Stree/Stone Street Tavern - when the weather is good they have the whole street lined with tables. Very fun for sporting events. It's in FiDi so not as touristy and its more standard pub grub fare than fine dining, but its a fun area.
  • Llama San - one of the more interesting dining experiences I've ever had. It serves "Nikkei" Cuisine which is the product of Japanese immigrants settling in Peru. Really interesting fusion food.

Again, this barely barely barely scratches the surface. I tend to trust reviews from https://www.theinfatuation.com/new-york although they have changed some since being acquired.

Have fun, New York is the best city in the world in my opinion.

Based on my past experience, the Uber-like car services will cost you a cool hundo to the heart of Manhattan.

Best way to get from LGA to city is town car. Driver will carry your crap, know where to take you, and generally be competent. It's a much more comfy ride and if it's your first time in NYC it will let you relax and take it in as you travel to your hotel.

Getting around town -- depends on where you're going and time of day. Subway can be a PITA late night and at rush hour. Late at night, I'm usually a taxi rider. I've only ever ubered once or twice in NYC. NYC is one of the few places on earth where taxis remain a competitive product because of price and ride.

1. Subway. They go everywhere and you can usually get within a few blocks of where you need to be. Learn to read the maps before you go. Much better than paying a taxi or uber to sit in traffic.

2. Dunno. I fly into EWR and take the train to Penn Station.

If you stay at the Bowery Hotel, have you ever gone into the John Varvatos store about a block away? Its the old CBGB's location. They kept a lot of the old posters, graffiti, and band stickers on the walls from CBGB. Its a very cool visit even if you aren't shopping for clothes

Don't even need a pass. If you use your credit card, once you hit the same dollar amount as the pass Sunday-Saturday it doesn't charge you anymore that week.

None, and the cheapest answer also couldn't be easier.

Land at LGA and follow the signs for the bus. While you're waiting for the LaGuardia Link Q70 bus, buy week-long MTA ticket for $30.

Hop on the Q70 when it gets there. Get off at the first stop - it's Jackson Heights-Roosevelt Avenue and it lets you off right at the MTA. Since you've already bought your card, walk past the giant line of idiots realizing they need to buy a card.

Roll up the escalator and take the train into Manhattan. Make sure it's an Express train and you'll be wherever you need to in Manhattan in no time.

Man screw the bus and MTA when you've got luggage and trying to get to a hotel. I want someone else to lug my **** around and drop me off at the entrance to my hotel where the porter can take over and bring it up to my room.

Also another cheap (free if you have an MTA pass) thing to do while you are out and about.

Take the 6 train downtown to the end of the line at the Brooklyn Bridge/City Hall station. When the pa says end of the line/exit the train don't get off the train. Just sit tight and wait. To head back uptown the train will effectively make a uturn and in the process go through the old City Hall station.

The original City Hall Station was opened in 1904 and closed in the 40s and remained largely untouched since then. It has massive skylights, glass tiles, vaulted ceilings, and fancy light fixtures. They occasionally open it up for tours but those are hard to come by. This is really the only way to see it now and it's beautiful. I think they ended up closing the station because it was so close to others and something about the turn being to sharp to open the doors. It's something I do every time I'm in the city. It's basically frozen in time.
