Have never once been able to get through the damn checkout process without calling over an employee. Scale messed up. No bar code on item. Won't take debit card, etc...

Self-checkout sucks!

Sounds like a you problem. I always use self-checkout for small trips. Rarely have any issue.

Only people who use a debit card for groceries also use food stamps, and I can only imagine those are an issue at self check out.

Rarely need assistance, sometimes with medicine purchases or other "chemicals".

I use self checkout 99% of the time I go to the store now. Easy out and get to wherever I am going

My biggest iissue with HEB self checkout is that they encourage you to bring your own bag, but don't give you room to put it down and load it. That chunk of space is wrapped around the small plastic POSs.

If an item doesn't have a bar code, and you're the one who picked the item, that's on you.

One thing that's annoying on the self checkout (usually not at HEB though) is the detector that checks the weight of the bagging area (to ensure you're not gaming the system somehow, I guess).

Trips me up when I place my scanned items back into my cart, because it won't let me scan anything until the bagging area weight reflects the scanned items.

Then, I realize...I'm in a sketchy area.

IIRC, once you scan a restricted item, further scans are blocked until approval has been entered. Maybe that has changed though, not sure.

Right. You can't scan once alcohol locks up the system.
I start checking my regular groceries and begin calling for help from the cashier immediately. By the time they get there I'm locked up because of the M/D 2020 and they fix it & I'm done.
It's a science really.

Also, just puzzled what triggered your question...I don't think anyone was suggesting that self-checkout reduced their expenses....

It irritates me to no end . So I grow and raise my own food. Plus I miss full serve at gas stations.

I saw where Whole Foods will start scanning me as I walk in…So I found a good alternative and it arrives in a big 18 wheeler at a nearby location and because I'm old as dirt, everybody brings my order to my car. Works out great. I may never walk in a grocery store again. What I don't grow or raise will come in the form of a big old truck and a bunch of young people acting like I can't carry my own bags. I really like it so far.

I will give The Walmarts credit on this one point - you can scan beer first, and keep on rocking with your checking. The yellow light will get someone there pronto (sometimes).

I think it would be great at my neighborhood Kroger if it tracked your self-check out history when you scan your Kroger card; too many "you are an idiot" attempts and the system just pops up a message that says "please see cashier on aisle 8 to checkout".
