I'm sure there's some terrible Discord somewhere the GenZers use instead.

I'm 34 but none of my friends read TexAgs, or at least don't subscribe. They just read Reddit and follow stuff on Instagram or Twitter. I think the average age here is for sure 50+.

I think it varies by board.

Probably comparable to Facebook. Users adopted when it was "cool" -- which was 20 years ago.

I registered Will94, my first user account, in 1999. I was 27.

I registered my current user name in 2011. I was 39.

I'm now 51.

Mine is 23 years old? Yowza. Proud to have never been permabanned.

Well, I take that back. I did have a username before this one that was permanently banned bc in college I went to jail for not paying a speeding ticket and a Texas A&M basketball player was there for getting busted with cocaine.

I was 18 and posted it to the board. Stupid!

My first account lasted 20 years until a few weeks ago. I don't post often, but I have learned that staff doesn't like it when you critique their ability to evaluate talent. Either that, or they just dislike the word drivel.

Better be careful, bro. Everything is fine in portal recruiting. Just fine. Totally super fine…

I remember when Face, Sex Panther and Ragnar ran the football board. Was one of the things that got me hooked on TexAgs.

First post was at 21 years old, got my original account perma'd so I could study for boards without the temptation to post here about 10 years ago. Now 34. I still feel like one of the youngest on this site.

I think average age is probably somewhere around the high 40s. This is why the general board is a shadow of its former self and why the politics board is so popular. This site is dying a slow, painful death.

Looking back it seems like peak TexAgs was around the Maziel era, just too many social media options for the Ags these days versus 15 years ago when this place was really the only game in town.

I'm guessing the other college boards have experienced a similar pattern over the years (or disappeared like a couple of horn sites).

Some younger folks and a co-worker think it's amusing that I'm posting on a "Forum," like its old technology. They mention Telegram etc. being the thing these days.

I went to a Texags football season kick-off event in the MSC a couple of years ago, and at 50ish, I was a youngster.

October 20, 1999. That was after the big crash, so put me down for another year/year and a half or so.

I think the responsibility and even risk that come with posting may be a lot for younger people. Social media today seems to dichotomize people into producers and consumers of media instead of integrating people into a message board community.

Now there are "experts" on near everything so it's just easy to go find expert knowledge on any minutia of a subject when 10+ years ago that wasn't the case. A message board community where there's a lot of general and some specific knowledge spread out over tons of people doesn't seem to be as needed or wanted today as it used to. Everything seems to be trending toward specialization where people are super intense about specific subjects. Considering this site still specializes in Texas A&M athletics, I would argue that's one reason why the premium board has gotten a little more unbearable the past couple of years.

I'm also guessing that the bonds of being an Aggie are not as tight as they used to be so there's less will to put up with some of the more abrasive types on this site.

There seems to be so much risk to when posting that I'm guessing a lot of people are scared about it which I get too. What's the point of posting if it good cause you to get fired or change your career trajectory. A lot of people with the most abrasive personalities on this site seem like business owners who can say whatever they want without repercussions.

Just some thoughts but didn't think it'd turn into a tlr, so sorry

Before TexAgs, I used to visit the Big12 baseball forum on austin360.com. When TA launched, a number of us came over and were the some of the first regulars on this baseball board. Now that you mention "the crash" I'm not entirely sure it was '99 when I registered the first time. Was TA in existence in '98?

Yeah, thats the way I remember it.

Around 1998 a lot of folks were posting about football and baseball on the gobig12.com boards which might have been the same as austin360 but I can't recall.

Biggest drama at the time was a poster named Longhorn Bob doxing somebody and contacting their employer over some nonsense. Pretty sure the poster was named RC Muy Loco.

In any event the traffic on Gobig12.com died off as folks migrated to texags. I might have been the last to get the memo on that but eventually made my way over sometime in early 1999.

Then #5 A&M goes up to Lubbock and manages to lose to Tech which crashed the site for a week or two before they got it sorted out.

So in otherwords nothing has changed in 20+ years. People ***** about texags and so forth but it's been the exact same thing since 1999. Nothing has changed.

If you're talking about the '99 baseball series in Lubbock I was there. Games called Friday and Saturday for snow and cold.

Played a DH in beautiful 50 degree sunny weather on Sunday, and I got the worst sunburn of my life. We got our butts kicked in both games, and I peeled for the better part of a week.

This picture was taken before those games.

EDIT - And big12sports.com was a part of austin360.com (was one of the links on the left). I'd forgotten that.

Maybe peak TexAgs, but peak GB was before Manziel. I feel like that's right around the time people started getting put in timeout for saying mean things, and everything went downhill from there.

That's true. Wasn't considering the niche level of baseball's interest.

We had a highly ranked baseball team in '99. We made the CWS that season. It was an easy mistake on my part as it was a personal trauma.

GoBig12.com was a Dallas Morning News Website.

Austin360 started as Hookem.com

I was on both websites as IIIHorn

PanhandleSlim was on them as well with a previous username.

All good points in your post. It's so easy now to find niche communities of shared interests or like-mindedness, that the give and take of message boards could seem pretty hostile and alien to someone who didn't grow up with them. And there for those seeking gratification or affirmation, there are other platforms where the likes on a random post will just dwarf whatever a top-level post garners on a message board.
