Her work is mediocre and predictable, her store are full of overpriced junk I could get at target, and from what the waco locals tell me she has ruined the town (not that there was much to Waco in the first place). So those of you who like her stuff can you tell me the appeal?

Her, the show, and everything that followed is a textbook definition of "too much of anything is a bad thing"

Hard no. Covered in moles. Maybe a B cup at most. You might say that she needs to "fix her uppers".

It's a good thing she has a product line at target for when you want to buy your mediocre overpriced decor.

She's a very savvy marketing specialist. She leveraged the money they made from their mediocre, dangerous renovation show to market herself as a brand and convinced suburban housewives they should love her. It worked.

Seems like she made herself a pretty good life in my book. Waco locals may hate it but she turned that place into a bit of a destination in a way. Not gonna fault somebody for getting theirs. She got hers and made herself a name. Not a bad life.

I have no idea why my mom was (is?) so fascinated by the show. It's predictable and they ignore all kinds of things that should have been addressed while the walls are already opened up. They go in and eliminate any kind of features that make the house unique in favor of the same formulaic crap every time. If I were looking at a place I'd consider one remodeled in her style last week to be in need of a complete reno the same if it was a 2000s McTuscan. I'd probably prefer the later because at least the upfront cost would be lower.

The first sentence is true, but she has a strong appeal to white suburban women and between her and Chip, they did take advantage of it and use their show to create a major business. Capitalism at its finest.

As far as ruining Waco, what was there to ruin? The town and a lot of secondary folks are more well off because of the Gaines. Waco was NOT a tourist destination before, but there are people going there and spending money to see all the Target junk at Magnolia Market.

The real question is, can they maintain all of that. I don't think it is sustainable long term.

I'm kind of surprised so many women like Joanna. The couple that does the show with the same formula in Mississippi (blond girl and bearded guy) seem much more likeable with her seeming genuinely nice and him not acting dumb all the time.

I have family in Waco that think it's great she took a dilapidated part of town and revitalized it. An area that was crumbling is now a vibrant tourist destination providing jobs and revenue for the community. Not sure how your people define "ruined".

My uncles's only complaint is that one of her fix up houses is down the street from him so they've had an uptick in traffic on their block from people coming to look at it (it looks like any other house on that street).

I grew up in Waco. It was (and still is, imo) a crap hole. There was nothing to ruin. I went to the same church as Joanna and her family did growing up, (she's a few years older) and even in high school she was very well-liked and generally a lovely and kind person. She and Chip employ a lot of people in Texas, including several of my childhood friends. Everyone I've ever spoken to about it says that they are great to work for and there is no denying that they've brought a lot of money into Waco that otherwise wouldn't be there. I have a cousin who owns a bookstore that is thriving almost solely because of tourists due to it's proximity to Magnolia. That's at least one small business in town supporting a family that wouldn't be if not for the Gaines' success. I'm sure there are countless others in the same boat.

People love to hate successful people; this is true no matter what industry you're talking about. I don't particularly care for her specific aesthetic, but I admire her ambition and ability to execute her overall vision and plans for their businesses. She's smart, no doubt about that. And if people were being honest, they'd admit that given the opportunity to accomplish what she has and make the money that she's made, they would do the same as she's done.

Depends on who you're talking about. The Gaines family has made their money. They could shut it all down and be set.

Before fixer upper in my travels around the world if for some reason Waco came up it was always about David Koresh and the Branch Dividians, now its always about Chip and Joanna Gaines. So even if shoddy construction and overpriced merchandise is their gig they should consider it a win.

Yes, you are correct but frequently in these situations the belief is this will go on forever and money is managed as such for both the business and personal lives. If they get too used to everything they touch turning to gold, then it isn't sustainable.

But if they keep a close eye on things, yes you are right. And in theory, they should be able to milk this for a while yet.

I always thought she came off rather cold on the show for some reason. Chip was the jokester and she always seemed to be annoyed by his antics. Such is the life though, someone's gotta be the professional, and someone's gotta keep it grounded

Or I'm just reading too much into 2 people being on camera a lot

Doing interior home renovation myself, I have had to do my share of shiplap and their style. While I am not a fan of the overall style...recycling furniture is fine, but some of their stuff should be thrown in the garbage...and their colors can be really bland...I do respect what they did and how they did it:

-they brought in a style that is fairly cost effective
-their style appealed to many when styles in the US were shifting from more formal to more casual
-they created a show and business that brought in much money to a local area
-the show appealed to women who enjoy shopping, decorating, and commenting as opposed to doing any of the work (going out on a limb, I really don't know if Joanna got her hands dirty?)
-making a white male (Chip) look somewhat of a doofus was popular (still is?) and empowers women

Not sure if their store/business will around in ten years? But good for them by creating a business, running it fairly well, providing jobs, etc.

Born and raised in Waco. I also have been fortunate to be successful in real estate. Have MANY dealings with Chip in the past. He's a complete fraud. 99% of that show is fake. TRUST ME.

A fraud in what sense? I have not once heard anyone connected with them, and I know people who have worked closely with them on a daily basis for years before they became famous, accuse them of anything illegal or unethical.

Unless you think that staging scenarios for HGTV shows is "fraud." In which case, well. I guess the lady who owns a butterfly day care and is looking for a home in Tuscany with a seven figure budget should probably be in prison.

She's talented. I can remember her original store. Wife and I went in regularly. He owed every contractor big money. When he got successful, he turned his back on people that stuck their neck out for him. And no, I didn't get burnt by him

no different then the other handful of big success stories in home renovation.

The gay flamboyant tattooed guy
The tall twin brothers
The CA blonde who divorced the husband
The Canadian guy in the overalls who fixes mistakes
etc
etc

Or move away from home improvement and you have Guy Fieri, Gordon Ramsey, Emeril, Giada DeLaurentits, Alton Brown, etc.. All of a caliber who can easily throw their name on something and people will buy it.

People love to latch on to characters. It has been the foundation of reality shows for over 2 decades now, and the people in the 'host pool' know it. They are all striving for that upper plateau.

And even that is questionable.

I live in Colorado, and if a conversation ever comes up where I tell someone my parents live in Magnolia, TX, they usually reply with 'oh is that where that Chip and Joanna show is?'

If you live in TX, you know it's Waco, but outside of TX, I don't know that 'Waco' is really coming out of anyone's mouth.

Yes I understand the Magnolia reference/confusion...
