I've always been fascinated by Diego Garcia. At what point did someone decide "let's boat a crap ton of construction equipment and materials out here and make this a livable place with some docks and airstrips and stuff."
It seems like the place Indy and Marion would take the ark to in that German sub (however they got off the island).
It must get some regular visits by tankers and other supply ships. It's just a really interesting location.
I'm very thankful I got to go there but I wouldn't want to go back unless it was a vacation. Which isn't an option. You either go there and turn in to a drunk or a hunk. The first time I went there I partied, so a drunk. The second time I went there I worked out relentlessly, so a hunk. Was probably in the best condition I've ever been in when I left. Only time I've been stronger was during covid when I made the 1000 lb club. I explored the entire island and rode my bike on tons and tons of trails, fished, snorkeled, chilled on the beach, explored, relaxed and did basically every MWR event available. It was a ton of fun. I probably rode my bike 1000 miles in the 4 months i was there. We still have a ton of the cool shells and I'm still great friends with some of the folks I met there. That marlin we caught was the first one they had caught there in like 10 years according to the Filipino boat crew.
The funniest thing about the place though was how twisted around their fingers the Filipino girls could get the Americans working there. Like spending their whole paychecks on them. It was so funny to watch happen.
