Why does Whataburger "Drive-thru" take so long?

I have a WB within a mile of the house. The small parking lot is useless because the drive thru line backs down the middle of it making it nearly impossible to just drop in and order inside. The time you'd save going in would be negated by the 20 minute wait for someone to let you back out of your spot.

I'll drive an extra few miles to find one of the new WBs that have massive parking lots and 2 lane drive thru's.

What slows things down, is fatty mcfatterson ordering something else when they get to the window to pay. Now, everyone is backed up in the que waiting behind them on something they just ordered, after waiting 20 minutes from ordering at the kiosk.

While I appreciate Whataburger making everything fresh, too many of their customers abuse that privilege by ramping up the pickiness of their orders. You've seen them - the woman hanging out her car door using hand gestures to explain every nuance of the details of preparation of each sandwich.

And if you're in a car line behind these people - well, you have to wait for all those details to be obeyed. And whoa be unto you if that person decides to sit at the window and check through everything and demand satisfaction if everything isn't perfect.

If you go inside, you get to skip past the Gordon Ramsey wanna be if you're just ordering a #1.
You got out Whataburgered.

Whataburger was my first job at 16. It was the 35th anniversary year and I worked at one of the busiest stores in Corpus. Back then it was a MAX of six minutes from ordering to handing the food to the customer in house or drive thru. We could handle the bar rush with three people if we had to do so, but most shifts had up to 7 plus a manager present.

Of course back then the menu was much more simple than it is today. The whatachicken and breakfast tacos were relatively new and our shake machine ALWAYS worked. The craziest orders we got were a triple triple or TBBS or extra crispy fries.

With the expanded menu and the crazy ordering system display, I can see how the minimum time to hand out an order has increased. But 20-30 minutes? That is just bad management or they do not have enough workers during rush shifts.

A portion of my last conversation while placing an order at the WB drive thru:

"Your total will be ?? dollars and ?? cents. Drive around please."

"For how long?"

Currently in a wb drive thru for 15-20 minutes and moved up one car. It's 3pm. This is insane. There's literally nothing available in a fast food drive thru worth waiting this long. Thought maybe being 2-3 cars ahead of me (bc its 3pm) meant it would be quicker.

Not just rush shifts. Understaffed all the time. Took me 45 minutes to get a breakfast on a bun last week at like 12am. And they still ****ed it up

Well it takes time to smash your bun and let the burger get cold.

There's a new Whataburger in Leander that I stopped by the other day. I made the mistake of going around dinner time, but already had dinner so was just planning on getting a shake.

Pull in, drive through packed, get up to the intercom to order, and the shake machine isn't working. By this point there are 5 cars behind me in line, both lanes A and B are packed in front of me, so I had to sit there for 40 MINUTES just to get out of the ****ing line.

Sitting in a Whataburger right now waiting for my online order. They apparently closed a location in Dallas for one week for renovations so this place is getting overflow. I've been waiting 5 minutes but the manager came over to confirm my order and explain the delay so I'm good.

That's what it always says. It used to say 5-7 minutes, but i guess they gave up on that. In my experience, that time does mean anything.

Either way, app + curbside pickup is still the best option.
