Somebody said golf. Yes. It's challenging, it's (semi) physical. It's outdoorsy. And judging by the glacial pace of the foursome I was behind yesterday, it's something your youngsters can do for the next 80 years.

I agree. I think I banged that list out quickly on my phone.

Longer list I'd add knowing how to start a fire and almost as important, how to put out a fire.

I'm surprised nobody has questioned why I put snow skiing on the list but, I've seen a number of people send their kids snow skiing with a Church group or some other seemingly safe scenario only to have the kid get seriously injured or killed.

For that matter, maybe even more important than swimming is the "Timothy Treadwell" example of don't EFF with Grizzly Bears. And if you have a daughter, make sure that she learns not to date a guy who screws around with Grizzly Bears.

How to "grind".... do a difficult task & stick to it through the end. Difficult to teach.
Foreign language (Spanish)
How to plan a trip
Handle a pistol, rifle & shotgun
Paddle a Canoe/Kayak, Swimming & Scuba Diving
Auto: Drive a stick (FIFY Protected), Jump Start a car, change a tire, get un-stuck, pull & back up with a trailer
Cook: Teach them 7-8 basic healthy meals they can make from memory.
Self defense: Judo, Boxing, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Wrestling or Muy Thai.

Many, many things to teach kids.

Typing is a big one. So glad my mom made me learn that. Watching a coworker peck at his keyboard pisses me off.

Coding is also a great skill to learn before college.

Social activism

Change,

Breaks, oil, air filter, tire, where the jack is on a car, truck, boat.

How to repair and install a toilet, sink, faucet, disposal, under sink plumbing

Program a wifi, a sprinkler system, how to install, repair and align sprinklers.

I don't expect my kids to have to do much of this, but if hey know how, then they know what to expect and they will grateful for work done.

The basics starting at 11 are all fazes of yard work, mow, edge, weed eat, clip, mulch, fertilize, tree limbing, replace weed eater head and line, and sharpen a lawnmower blade.

Get thru that, and they will appreciate things a lot more.

Have you watched any of the terminator movies? Kids today better learn how to think critically, debate, have self-awareness, use a gun, and lead folks.

Besides preparing them for the end of the world, there are a lot of good suggestions on this thread so far. It mostly depends on your kids, their interests, and their ages. Whatever you do, have them do it with you.

My older kids today learn just about anything they "need" to know how to do from watching videos on Youtube.

I have 4 kids that play baseball/softball and I am constantly amazed at the amount of dads who throw a ball like a fairy. Instant loss of respect.

Just remember the dip**** at a drive through when I wanted a small burger and coke to hold me over on a drive. It was $5.26 and I gave him $20.26. He then proceeded to give me $14.74 and my original $0.26 back. I said I wanted a five and a ten and what did he think the $0.26 was for. He said he had no idea but what was the big deal cause he gave me the $0.26 back.

Play a musical instrument. I've been involved in athletics my whole life. For the last 38 years I've been coaching others in how to hit - catch- or throw a ball. I would love to play a guitar. I know a few chords, but not well enough to do much. When I retire, my goals are to play my guitar and speak fluent Spanish. I've got aways to go.
