I can't believe how many people don't like vienna sausages! My teenage sons will fight me for them.

On a camping trip recently I finished a can of them and was still hungry so I slammed the leftover juices. Don't do that. It was a bad idea.

Steamed vegetables. Whyyyy did my mom think this was *the* way to prepare veggies? I still struggle with yellow squash because of this. She could have sauted, grilled, roasted... but she steamed them to mush. Once I started cooking for myself, I found that I actually love vegetables!

I have to thank my WWII father for the fact I've never eaten Spam. He was a pilot, and one of the items he ate regularly was Spam. When he married my mother, he told her that he never wanted to see a can of Spam in their house...and she honored that promise. Ironically, I've thought about buying a can just to see how disgusting it is.

Spam is (or can be) quite tasty. It just takes a little creativity. It probably doesn't meet many dietary guidelines, though, concerning fat, sodium, etc...

I'd prefer it to other meals the military served me. Consider pork patty MREs from the olden days.

In my early teen years I would take Tasters Choice instant coffee pour about a cup into a big mug, add enough water to get it wet,and then add a little milk and sugar. It had the consistency of pudding.

I don't know whether to be grossed out or applaud the reckless abandon. Or both.

No.
My Dad was a Chief/USN, with a wife & 4 little kids in the mid 60's, stationed in San Diego.
Sometimes my Mom would make 'milk' with Carnation powder.
I hated that red/white box.

To save money, my mom would serve us milk that was half carnation powdered milk and half real milk. I hated it. And, we had to eat ice milk instead of ice cream. Real butter was a huge rarity.

Not unusual at all.

In the 60s, my Dad was a Sgt in the Air Force. 4 kids. He was gone a lot. My mom knew how to stretch things.

Half powdered, half real... high cotton.

Edit:

Both my parents were raised in rural Mississippi during the depression. Food on the table was pretty easy for these people.

My Dad is still plugging along at age 92. He could not have any visitors for his birthday a couple of weeks ago . (he lost his spouse of 70 years a couple of years ago).

His dad and brothers all saw combat during WW 2. He missed the big war. He is a combat vet of Korea and Viet Nam.

Now, he waits to watch the Spurs and Astros on his 84" HD. He never misses a game.

His independent living facility does the best they can. I'm not able to visit. Nor are my surviving siblings. It's a tough time.

A better version of that is buying Kraft Deluxe Macaroni and Cheese. Brown some ground sirloin with truffle salt and then mix them all together.
