Not really any more insane that a $5000 bail for someone making minimum wage. Bail amounts have to viewed in the context of the person's ability to pay it, not the amount. Bail isn't a fine, it is something to make sure you show the **** up to court. Her ability and willingness to pay $500k for what amounted to a cover charge for her daughter to get in to college parties, makes it pretty clear that bail needed to be more than $500k to complete her to show.

While I agree with you that money gives you an advantage in every aspect of life, I disagree that this was a victimless crime. I'm assuming for every person that gets in because of these types of efforts someone got displaced or denied admission.

What's wrong about this is the people with money failed to take advantage of their, well, advantage and then had to resort to a high level of cheating.
Yes, those who weren't admitted are victims, but I still feel like this is a civil matter and not a criminal one. Or rather, it should be a civil matter. I'm curious to read the indictment to find out under what criminal statutes these people are being charged.

There was a significant amount of tax fraud involved given quite a bit of the payments made were to a fake charity and those payments were deducted when filing income taxes.

Kind of hard for me to muster up any sympathy for a bunch of grown men that like to put on costumes, play dress up and then go hang out with criminal organizations and then be shocked when said criminal organizations start shooting and the ones playing dress up get wrapped up in it all by the cops.

Agreed. That's the last time I remember a $1 million bond being handed out like candy. If I recall correctly, anyone and everyone was arrested and given a $1 million dolllar bond no matter what.

especially when her husband is a foreign gazillionaire. Probably wouldn't be hard for her to leave the country for good if she wanted.

I wonder what the plea negotiations look like right now.
