Smokers are nicer, friendlier, better people than non-smokers, in my experience. This thread is more evidence of that.

the act of smoking cigs in the parking lot or in the smoker's corner is generally a social endeavor. Then they come back into the office and sit in your office smelling like an ash tray. Then the next person walks in and almost barfs because the smell has lingered. All the while the smoker has moved on and not cared about how their smoking habits are affecting others.

so yes. the selfish nature of a smoking habit makes them "better" people in general.

Smokers are better for the environment. They die earlier and use less resources.

To the OP, I hope you have zero addictions (pron, buying guns, drinking, anything). It's 2018. They know the risks associated with smoking. They are adults who make their own choice. So TF what. It doesn't directly impact you does it? People smoke for any number of reasons. I've tried it several times and it did absolutely nothing for me. I dipped Copenhagen for the longest time. Quitting is incredibly hard. The craving never truly goes away I've found even after a year or more. Hell I bought a can the other day, had a couple pinches then threw it away. It's a mother ****er. Being condescending to smokers isn't going to sway anyone to quit. Being supportive is. But in the end they are adults. If they want to smoke light up. Really won't affect you. Obviously if someone is smoking in your face or on your property or whatever then ask politely but don't be a dewsh

Smoking is a tacky, trashy habit.

I wish all cigarette smokers would at least switch to pipes. They're cooler looking, generally smell better and are reusable.

Smoking a cigarette while on the river, at the beach, or on board a ship at sea is a fine experience.

Seems like non-smokers are a bunch of fairies.

A little bit of secondhand smoke once in a while ain't gonna kill you.

It's 2018 and you still work at a job that lets people smoke on campus. Sounds like the joke is on you!

This. I'm glad that smelling smoke doesn't make me have a hissy fit like a lot of you.

I do not understand smokers and smoking.

I watched it kill both of my parents.

Dad from emphysema, Mom from lung cancer. About 2 years apart. They were each about 65 when they died.

Dad quit cold turkey the day he got the emphysema diagnosis. The Dr. told him, "You have the worst case of emphysema I have ever seen, you're going to die a slow painful death." Dad said, "Well I just quit smoking", the Dr. replied, "sure, we'll see". Dad never touched another cigarette which I believe is why he was able to survive another 5 years.

Less than a year after Dad's death, Mom went to the Dr. and an x-ray showed something in her lungs. I was there when the Dr. told her it was cancer. She continued smoking and died about a year later.

I still have 3 siblings who smoke. I've told them that when they get cancer or any other disease related to smoking, I'll not be visiting them in the hospital. We all saw what it did to our parents and I refuse to watch it happen to my siblings who are still stupid enough to continue smoking. I don't want to watch them die of it as well.

I hate cigarettes and smoking. No redeeming qualities whatsoever.

Bad socially - you stink, you need to get away from people / situations to smoke, you hang out with other losers who smoke, you become fidgety in social settings when you can't use tobacco, non tobacco users avoid you like the plague, etc.

Those are awful stories, Dad-O-Lot, and I know how much it pains you to have watched those deaths.
I cannot overemphasize how much regret my head and neck cancer patients nearly always have after being given their diagnosis. Chemotherapy is bad, but radiation therapy in the head and neck region is awful and the side effects are typically lifelong. I have had patients quit in the middle of therapy, saying they would rather die than continue with it. And, of course, the surgeries in the involved structures are big, bad, and ugly. I try to do as little of it as I can, beyond making the diagnosis I usually refer them to the academic centers if they are candidates for extirpative surgeries. And the deaths from head and neck cancer are, to put it bluntly, typically not nice deaths. I don't blame you for not ever wanting to witness one again.

As a high school teacher, I've seen vaping at an absurd level of popularity in the past couple years. Kids think they're healthy because they aren't cigarettes.

Kids stopped smoking cigs and the industry responded by getting them addicted with vaping.

I quit 12 years ago. But the hateful damn things still tagged me.

If you think you'd enjoy doing an inhaler twice two times a day, by all means take another puff.

I sound a little superior, but there's nobody to blame but me. If I was (what I thought at the time was) partying hearty, I might burn through 4-5 packs. Mr. Party, woo-woo. Normal was 1-2 packs a day.

If you have any influence with someone who smokes, or even does those vape things, try to talk them out of it. The balloon payment is a blitch (and. really, I haven't even reached the really bad part, yet.)

This is not to gain sympathy for me, it is in the hope of helping convince someone -- anyone -- to either not start or to stop. If it takes 10 tries, stop.

My grandfather didn't smoke and died at 89. My grandmother didn't smoke, and died at 99. My dad smoked 40 years and died at 67 due to emphysema and renal stenosis/kidney disease. He tried to quit, but couldn't kick it.

They don't call them coffin nails for nothing.

If the side effects dont bug you, Chantix is a miracle drug.

The first time I tried it, I had irritability side effects and couldn't continue. A few years went by and for some reason my body changed in a way that some medications that used to not work suddenly began to, so I tried Chantix again. It worked like a charm.

This is how I'd describe the experience, compared to the nicotine patch: When I had the patch on, I didn't want to smoke because I was having the nicotine replaced transdermally. And, I was able to step off the patch too. BUT...I still wanted to smoke when I would see someone smoking...the cravings persisted.

On Chantix, I stopped having cravings, I no longer want to smoke, it tweaks your brain chemistry with respect to the nicotinic receptors to that end, in my experience.

The only side effect I experienced while taking Chantix was having very vivid dreams.

I was only on it for 2 weeks. I didn't know I was suppose to get a refill after I went through the first packet (it's a 12 week program). I was still able to quit and haven't smoked in 3 years. The placebo effect is real people!!!
