Except in their last few years they use an extraordinary amount of healthcare. If they are poor, then the taxpayers cover the cost.

If the government is in the healthcare business, which they recently decided to do, smoking is in no one's best interest.

Philip Morris got absolutely BLASTED in the media years ago when it was popular for trial attorneys to sue the cigarette manufacturers and make ridiculous amounts of money and finance politicians' campaigns. The Czech Republic was, if I recall, contemplating a copycat suit and so Philip Morris showed them that it was actually good for their economy if they were killing people off before they were eligible for old age benefits. Needless to say, this was not well received.

I agree. I moved to Texas from the Northeast and there are FAR more smokers up there.
