Old Army died because the "keepers of the spirit" wanted to keep it to themselves. A few decades of telling over 90% of the student body to just "stand on the sidelines and do what you're told" will eventually result in a student body and alumni base that doesn't give a damn. Things have changed every generation for the past 150 years, and each time it has been decided by the old guard that Ol' Army has gone to hell.
