It sounds to me like the easiest way is to just go have your legal names changed, fork up the dough, which really isn't that much and then to back to the DMV.

Not everything requires a legal maneuver. They told you what the legal process is. Just go do it. Life is inconvenient for all of us.

Ha well problem solved. Literally the guy was an idiot and was talking out of his ass. He actually faked going back to his supervisor and another woman helped my wife and told her he was wrong. He is now getting his ass chewed. Problem solved. I am now Smith-Jones.

Jumping through the hoops sucks, but I think it is a relatively small price to pay to get what you want. It is a dumb rule.

Also, I have always been annoyed by hyphenated names, but to each her own.

We aren't planning on going by the hyphenated names anywhere in public. At work she's still going by her last name and I'm still going by mine. It's something we wanted to do for us. Nobody will ever refer to us as our hyphenated names nor willl we introduce ourselves as such.
