I hope you're sitting down but many times the answer is yes. Ever heard of round steak and chuck steak? As a matter of fact, the "chuck-eye" can be a decent cut of meat. Then there's the "flat iron" steak cut from the shoulder...... Now cutting these after cooking as a roast would be rather dumb......

I don't think anyone would call the piece you cut off a steak AFTER cooking...

They might call it a slice, though...

There's a difference between cutting them before cooking and after.

What part of my post didn't folks read? I said cutting it off a cooked roast was rather stupid. For the slower of mind around here, I guess I should have added "and it wouldn't be a steak".

You have a very hard time admitting when you are wrong, don't you?

Let me help you out, you are wrong here. When you are eating a serving of prime rib, you are eating ROAST beef, not a steak.

You will NEVER walk into a restaurant, ask for "a steak" and be served prime rib. Never.

So by this definition, if I were to cook my rib section on a grill, I would cease to have steak, because I didn't cut it first???
"Roasting" can mean cook on open fire, it doesn't only mean to cook in oven.

If you cut the piece off first, but then roast in the oven.. what is it?

I said if I cooked a pot roast and cut off a hunk would it be a steak? You said yes.

Now you're saying it wouldn't be a steak.

I has the confuse...

Why on earth would you put a serving/slice of prime rib ROAST on the grill.

I think for dinner tonight I'll make some rib-eye steaks. But I'll roast them, and then cut them at the table... said no one ever.

Trying to explain what steak is to 62strat reminds me of the VCR scene in City Slickers.

Look dude, for this discussion, I lumped them with steak, just like they always are on a menu. This isn't some graduate lecture on the history of bovine cuts. They aren't f-in meatoafs for crying out loud. No one asks for the 'filet steak' either, they ask for the filet.. or the ribeye, or the prime rib.

So take yur arguin somewhere else cowboy.

I assumed nobody would be stupid enough to cook it first and then try to call it a steak. I was wrong. It might also have been the absurdness of the question that threw me off.
