Sqrt(-4) = 2i
Sqrt(-9) = 3i
2i * 3i = 6(i^2)
6(i^2) = -6

-6

2i * 2i = -4
-2i * -2i = -4
3i * 3i = -9
-3i*-3i = -9

So...sqrt(-4) = +- 2i
sqrt(-9) = +- 3i

Thus the answer is +-6, not just -6

"Imaginary number" more of that liberal clap trap that is trying to make my daughter go to the bathroom with illegal alien trans atheists that deny the 6 day creation or what Obama calls common core.

Since i literally means the sqrt of -1 (or i x i = -1) the answer is not positive.

This. And this isn't one of those ****ing ambiguously written order of operations questions. This is the answer.

Except the square root operation produces 2 results.

It's not irrational. It's not irrational at all!

Pie sounds real good right now.

Wolfram Alpha disagrees.

Just because:
-6 * -6 = 36
6 * 6 = 36
does not mean:
sqrt(-6*-6) = +-6

So does your calculator, but that's because they only give one solution.
Alpha is not an ordinary calculator. For example it returns -i and i for the solution of x^2+1=0.

I'm sorry?

I'm sure it's treating the square root as a function as most calculators do.

Isn't the defintion of radical(x) the principal square root of the number? If the OP intended sqrt() to equate to the radical, then it should only be the positive root I think.

Edit: TA does not play well with the radical symbol.
