I feel pretty sure the cop won't be in trouble. He probably wrote more citations that day than he does all year, so what's the harm in using some discretion and having some fun.

One of my husband's friends used to carry a Magic 8 Ball in his patrol car. If he came across a really minor violation, he'd give the subject the option to ask the ball if they should get a ticket or not and just go with what the ball said. It was always a big hit, even with people who ended up getting tickets out of the deal.
