I've been calling it soda more lately. Partially because I have been drinking vodka soda more as my beverage of choice, and partially because it is simpler and saves time over all

The majority of the state and population excluding San Antonio is shown to say coke.

I don't do that. I don't see it necessary to state that I want a coke and follow that up by saying "specifically, a Dr. Pepper". I'll say the name of the drink I want. They don't ask you what kind of coke you would like at a restaurant or a movie theater. If I'm referring to multiple carbonated beverages, then I call them sodas.

How I talk to close friends and how I talk to people serving me a drink are rarely comparable.

A vending machine will either put out drinks or snacks in almost all circumstances. That is common knowledge. I would say "could you get me a Dr pepper from the vending machine" or "could you get me a snickers bar from the vending machine". Or you could call it a drink machine or snack machine.
