Not all trophies are first place. In fact, by definition most are not. Moreover, the "everyone gets a trophy" mentality of modern society has further diminished them all.

Every time we have one of these threads, I point out that the most important part about disciplining your kid is to get to know your kid and know what works and what doesn't work. When my daughter was first diagnosed with Asperger's (she was 3), we were at our wit's end trying to figure out how to discipline her because we had learned that anything physical simply didn't work. It just made things worse. So we watched her to see how she reacted to certain things. We discovered that if I raised my voice even just a little, she would start crying and go to her room, sometimes making a detour to find every picture of her in the house and turn it so it was facing the wall. I actually had to be very careful not to raise my voice at all except when I wanted her to stop whatever disruptive behavior she was demonstrating at the time. So that's all we had to do.

My middle child will be 3 in two weeks. I spank. Mom doesn't. Child obeys me. Says "No" to Mom. I'm sure that's a coincidence.

I was about 7 when grandma made me cut off a branch of a mesquite tree so she could whip me with it.

I'd wager there are far more jackasses in this country that weren't spanked than jackasses that were.

I'm a jackass who was spanked. You always hear people say "I was spanked and turned out fine." Well I was spanked and didn't. Not that that means anything. Whether or not you were spanked or spank your kids doesn't make you or them good or bad. It's just one small thing that happens in your lifetime. It's not some big worldview changing event. Get the **** over it.

It's all about whether you got the buckle or the strap.

I guess if you can't outsmart a 3 year old feel free to use the fact that you are bigger to correct him/her. That should teach a valuable life skill.

I like a book called setting limits with your strong willed child. The methods were very effective for my family. I couldn't find any books about how to pick an object to beat your kids.

Why do you need an object? What about your hand? Seems cowardly to use an object.

I've taken classes, and spanking is a last resort method. I've only spanked twice so far, it's rare and effective IMO. Try not to be so cocdescending, and know what a parenting class talks about before using it as an example.

I very rarely spanked my kids. Instead, I picked them up and whispered warnings to them. If they were too far gone to hear me, we left the premises immediately and didn't return until they could hear me. I didn't put them down until they got their s*** together and started behaving appropriately.

When they were too big to pick up, I found that grasping them firmly on the back of the neck, pulling them in and whispering to them usually worked. If not, then they'd get a smack on the back of the head, followed by the neck grab to keep them close until they started behaving. They eventually learned to settle down, if only to escape my intimidation tactics.

The wooden spoon was the instrument of choice.

Wife was slow to use it until she figured our two wonderful boys listened to me while the other two wouldn't be so quick to listen to her.

BTW we actually had to use it only a few times. Once the spoon showed itself it was ALLWAYS used. It was never shown and not used. But again it was hardly ever shown or used.
