Spanking done right, in love not anger, works very well....it did for my kids. They were very well behaved, and thank us to this day for not letting them be brats. One of the most important things is to be consistent and fair. Once they understood the lines, they stayed within boundaries, and really needed very few spankings, because they knew it would happen. There are studies that show consistency is the most important thing about discipline. If timeouts work for some people, great! Every parent has to decide what works best for their own.

Boys need more discipline in general than girls....boys test the boundaries more often..I rarely had to ever spank my daughter...

Interesting to read some responses from that long ago. Wonder if the posters today are as universally pro-spanking.

We don't spank our toddler, who is particularly hard-headed and willful, but also pretty sensitive. She is usually pretty devastated when she receives natural consequences, like having something taken away because she threw it, or being forced to be alone when she hits, so I don't see what it would accomplish for her. I'm quite certain it would only cause her to escalate her intensity.

Also, I suppose I'm a product of my generation, but it just seems weird to think about striking my daughter, even though I was spanked as a kid and it seemed natural at the time. Perhaps I will find out that we're naive, but it seems like if I show her plenty of affection, but also set and enforce consistent boundaries, she will turn out fine. Also, I've heard from other dads that their perspective on discipline was different for their sons and daughters, so maybe I would feel differently if we had a boy.

Belt, board, and razor strap (that was the worst.) However, the worst punishment I ever received was the first time I was lectured instead of spanked.

When we rode horses with grandaddy, he'd pick a switch from a tree on our way outta the pasture in case he needed to use it. That was enough to straighten us up. Just watching him pick it off the tree was enough.

Look around at what is going on today and the age group of the thugs rioting and assaulting police officers and burning things down.

This no spanking thing is a direct result of behavior specialists and child psychologists who thought they "knee better" than their parents and that spanking was detrimental, hurt kid's self esteem and taught them that hitting was okay. What percentage of those antifa thugs do you think got a good old fashioned spanking?

That no spanking and "everyone gets a trophy" schooling and parenting philosophy is working out REAL well.

It's something my wife and I have disagreed about for a while. My mom beat the ever-living, ever-loving Christ out of me many times (rightfully so). I'll never forget having a wooden spoon broken across my rear end when I was 10 and decided to call her a certain term for a female dog. The one and only time that happened. My aunt was a "pick your switch" type of disciplinarian.

My wife wasn't ever disciplined like that really because she was a good kid. But I know how the boys in my family are, and I know that the day will come that the only solution is a good ass-whoopin'.

I always thought that I would spank my kids, but then I ended up with the most sensitive child ever. When she was 3, she got one very gentle swat on the butt when she disobeyed me, and she completely fell apart. For weeks afterwards she was genuinely terrified of getting a "spanking" again. She's a very compliant child by nature, so it is rare that we have to discipline her, but after that one incident we swore that we would never spank her and we never have since.

I'm not opposed to spanking in general, but it just isn't the right thing for some kids. I used to think parents were full of it when they'd say that, but I can guarantee that my daughter would be a shell of the person she is now if we had spanked her.

I got spanked so many times for such minor things that I don't remember much. I got the hand, the belt, the flyswatter, even switches made from shrubs next to the church building.

My mom broke her hand once when she swatted me on my head....I reckon it really did hurt her more than it did me that time.
