I don't think I ever got a true spanking...I had two older brothers who were always in trouble - they were great examples as to what NOT to do. Now my Mom did pop me across the face when I was about 14 - I think she told me or asked me to do something and I not only said no but I left off the "ma'am"...that was the last time I did that. Pulling privileges and grounding worked really well with me, particularly the grounding.

I never had children but if I had I am pretty damn sure they would have gotten smacked across their butts when necessary. I forget which poster had this in his signature line: "spanking is good for a kid - it calms their nerves" or something to that effect.

I was and I will. I even plan to implement the time honored tradition of sending them to the closet to select the instrument of their punishment.

I was spanked and I spank my son. The one thing I refuse to do is slap in the face. My grandfather used to do that as an impulse punishment, he was very short-tempered. I hated it.

I would not spank a friend's child, nor would I let anyone else spank my children.

The one and only time I did spank my friend's child, he told his parents that it didn't hurt. They said then apparently I didn't do it right so they spanked him again for getting a spanking at my house.

My mom swatted or popped both of us when we were hellians! Daddy on the other hand, would wait and warn and ask us to "cut it out!", "straighten up!" and I knew instinctively that meant we had already crossed the line....once we reached that point it was snatching off the leather belt and about three slaps with that and you didn't soon forget. I think he spanked me three or four times my whole life.

You are a complete DA to know the rules/conswquences and break them! I was compliant and never gave them any trouble...my sister was reared the same way by the same parents and I don't know why she could never figure it out. It is almost like we weren't even related she is so different.

Yes and yes. My mom did the spanking... usually with the hand or a spatula or wooden spoon. Dad mostly wanted a "GOOD" explanation for why you did what you did. (This was worse). I should have been a fast learner, but I wasn't... my parents refused to be embarassed in public, so I can remember spending many an evening sitting in the car watching the rest of my family eat a dinner at a restaurant. I also had to sit in the car in the summer while my mom finished shopping at TG&Y. (I have always felt that she should have to go to jail for this!!!!!) LOL I respect the hell out of my parents for it all though and wish that more people would take their kids out of restaurants and stores so that my dining or shopping experience is not ruined!

I was maybe once. When I have kids, I will never hit them. There are much more effective means of punishment that do not require violence.

I suspect making the decision on whether or not to use physical punishment before you have kids is a bad idea... wait until you know what works on the kid. If timeout or a lecture works, no need to break out the belt. On the other hand, if nothing else works, you might just have to suck it up and deliver a good thrashing. At some point, it becomes your responsibility to effectively discipline your child no matter how much you dislike it.

Many, Many, times. I was the middle child and turned out to be the black sheep. I got in trouble more times than my 4 siblings put together. I got whipped by a board that hurt like hell. If the board wasnt around I got whipped by the most sturdy thing they could find. One time I got in trouble for something(I cant remember what it was). My Dad told me to go out in the woods and choose a my stick to get my licks with. So I went out there looking for the best limb I could find thinking I might get out of it if I bring a good one back. Well I brought a very sturdy hickory tree limb back that had a whole bunch of knots all over it(which makes the pain 10 times worse). I show it to my Dad and he says "Thats a hell of a stick, now bend over". He whipped me good with that thing. Got whipped one time in high school to. A bunch of us were having a throwing war in the lockeroom my freshman year on the day of our football game. We all got in trouble and got 5 licks each. Well old Coach Bates board was nothing to take for granted. That thing was big, it had holes in it(which adds pain), and he had duck tape wrapped around it(which suprisingly also adds pain). Anyways he would tell you to put both your hands on his desk. On the wall you could see his shadow swinging that board back and forth acting like he was warming up which made you worry. Then he would turn around and start that board full speed for you a**. It would put fear in you, then he would stop mid flight and with the flick of the wrist lightly tap you on the back side. You would be suprised at how bad those taps hurt. I cant imagine full speed licks. Then afterwords he had each one of us sign the board with a permanant marker lol.

I wasnt a bad kid, its just that my parents wanted to make sure I didnt turn out bad. Most of the time, I deserved what I got. To this day I still think that I have the coolest Dad. When I have kids, Im going to whip them to if I have to. Im not going to whip them as bad as I got whipped, but I'll still get the message across to them.

Wow, TrueAg. That is really, really sad. If I had been through that I don't think I could even consider spanking my kid.

Funny thing is that I laugh about it now. I turned out a good kid for it. I didnt get it that bad often. But when I did, I learned from it. Even though I went through those times I have alway had a good relationship with my parents. I was and still am stubborn like my Dad and that was what got me in trouble most of the time. At least I was never abused.

It's somewhat discerning, yet not surprising, that the "no corporal" punishment crowd is what we consider the "liberal" crowd.

I'm glad I resurfaced this 3 1/2 year old thread.

I myself, have a hard time physically disciplining my kids.

The rib and I trained them from an early age to be obedient and respectful, and quite honsestly, I have never, ever felt that they have need a physical punishment- though I am a supporter of this.

I've seen too many brats in check out lines to know better, my kiddos were not the brats that you see nowadays.

I'm blessed for that.
