My father said he wanted to make a post after being showed this thread so im gonna let him have a shot at it.-

Have never posted before, although my sons live on TexAgs, but reading about A&M in the 80's sure brings back memories, as I was there from '78 to '85, and will post on one of their accounts. Excuse me if this is a bit long, but it was the best 7 years of my life.

The Cow Hop at Northgate - where I learned that cream gravy, not ketchup, should be eaten on French Fries.

Farmer's Market at Northgate and in Bryan - The Dorian Sandwich - never seen one anywhere else.

Mr. Gatti's across from Zachary - had the upstairs area with the private booths - never have seen those anywhere else either - great for dates.

The Deluxe Burger across from Crocker - Cherry Cokes that put Sonic to shame.

Sunday Brunch Buffet at the top of Rudder Tower - semi-formal with a wonderful view of campus.

Ken Martin's Steakhouse - Chicken Fried Steak in the Cave Room - anyone remember that?

And if I could save a little money, Ft. Shiloh, Interurban, or Pelican's Wharf.

Godfather's Pizza at Culpepper Plaza followed by ice cream at Swensens, if there was still room.

But the top of the list had to be the previously mentioned Mother's in old Bryan. This was an old frame house where a bunch of Grandma's would get together and cook their hearts out for the college students (pass the mashed potatoes and damn the Health Dept). You ate family style, passing the bowls to whomever you ended up sitting next to. A generous entree and all-you-could-eat of everything else for about $3.00. I remember eating there one evening and paid a little octogenarian lady in a rocking chair in the front sitting room on my way out. She handed me a Bank Bag with probably $500 (or maybe $5,000) in it and ask me to make my own change, all about six feet from the front door! This would never happen anywhere today.

Re: "The Deluxe Burger across from Crocker - Cherry Cokes that put Sonic to shame."

I always went with the vanilla Coke iteration.

***

"Sunday Brunch Buffet at the top of Rudder Tower - semi-formal with a wonderful view of campus."

Use to eat there once a week... until administration turned it into a private club/dining room for staff/faculty... believe it was the only locale on campus that sold booze... ran into John David Crow on the elevator he was leaving the car while I was getting on... almost knocked me over... he was in a hurry.

***

"And if I could save a little money, Ft. Shiloh, Interurban, or Pelican's Wharf."

Ate at all these locales... old roommate worked at the what we called Pelican's dWharf... their grasshopper pie was an excellent after diner treat.

In the early 80's, the MSC was open 24 hours a day in that everyone could sit and wonder around inside the building. Also, the area around the MSC was very open with a parking lot across the street. Now, the area around the MSC is so built up as to be crowded.

*Forgot about Mother's. Excellent eats.
*There were also keg parties in the Corps dorms. One of my earliest fish memories was watching one of my seniors (Freddie Casper) go into the crapper at 10 on Saturday morning, grab a cup, pull the tap, and start up what he had going on the night before.
*Busting ass and chowing down on Thursday nights before an out of town game so we could get our outfit's spot at The Grove and singing "Macho, Macho, man!" on the stage.

When I was a high school senior, my best friend and I would go to Farmers Market at Northgate. A full ham and turkey sub, chips and a drink cost a total of $3.14.

I was there in the 70's not the 80's. One of the early women.

But I remember moms.

It was pre chicken--great parties at the trailer parks and handful of apartments.

Lakeview club.

And nickle beer night at Sparky's/Ralph's complete with black light room.

Plus a place I think was called the peanut gallery.

I was in elementary school back then. The one thing that sticks out in my memory is the area from 2818 all the way to Welborn was just pasture and charlet cattle. The koppe bridge restaurant was a feed store. It still smells the same as it did back then.

This.

I was born and raised in Bryan since '82. While I don't remember all of the A&M related things (apart from going to Bonfire) I do remember that driving from Bryan (approximately the WJ Bryan exit on 6) down to Post Oak Mall or Southwest Parkway seemed like it took FOREVER to get to. There was NOTHING on 6. I'll always picture the northwest intersection of University and 6 as a forest.

That's an understatement.

I'm going to make this thread my home page because it brings back such great memories.

There was only one or two ATMs on campus when I arrived as a fish and they still dispensed $5 bills which was the denomination I could afford to take out. Most of the pizza places would deliver a 12" pizza with three toppings and a large dring for $5.

The Dishes
"The Night I Dreamed I was Elvis"

Spent 1986 to 1989 in CS. CS' southern boundry ended, oddly enough, before you ever got to the Silk Stocking, which is still there.

I had a fireworks stand out on Harvey Road in 1987. We were on TV and had to tell everyone to "go out of town" with your fireworks.

Also, I worked at the "Aggie Steakhouse" behind Loupot's which was an offshoot of the ever-popular GM Steakhouse in Austin.

The world was different in that technology had not made us think that we should all be watching or talking with each other 24/7

The Pebble Creek development began in the 80s. That was way south of town.

A cow pasture was in the Target/Gattitown lot. There was a small white house on the corner.

Schlotzsky's had two locations: one across from Fajita Rita's and the other on Southwest Parkway where Quizmo's is now. They had manual ovens and made far superior sandwiches than the current ones.

We leased two large pastures (combined probably 1400 acres at the end of (Old) Arrington Road, where the soccer fields and Indian Lakes are. We hunted it and ran cattle on it. It was very remote, and a lot of it was thick post oak/yaupon thicket. We had to go a LONG way out of town and turn right at the water tower onto Greens Prairie Road. There was no exit, and Greens Prairie Road was gravel and barely wide enough for two cars to meet.

They built Post Oak Mall in '81-'82, and everyone thought they were crazy to build it way out in the sticks.

Zebra opened for Cheap Trick in GRW. Night Ranger may have played there but it wasnt with Cheap Trick.

How about:
Bow Heads

Karl Pallmeyer articles in the Batt

Igloo's drive through daquaris. The building is still there. It is that tiny tiny building near...whatever the old Gattiland, IHOP is now.

Tom's BBQ

La Tacqueria...greatest EVAAAAAAR!!!

Dr G's/Morgenstern's

When I was in grad school in the mid '90's I got to know Dru Wilson a bit because I went to Archtitecture school with his wife, Beth, back in the day. Great guy. He still played from time to time. BB King came into town and Dru played with him down in Bryan.

Pallmeyer invented trolling rants before there was such a thing as a web message board e.g. referring to the Corps of Cadets as the "fascist fraternity in fatigues."

Seems like it was '80, '81' and '82. Both opened for Cheap Trick, but different years. I seem to recall Night Ranger in '80.

Billy Idol also play GRW.
Of all the I saw, REM was the best. Great show.

Cheap Trick opened *for* Night Ranger in '85. I was in GRW for that. We though about leaving after Cheap Trick played their set, but when Night Ranger came out on stage climbing out of an ugly-*ss Aladdin's Lamp, we had to stay to see what that was all about...they were "Motorin'", all right. *yawn*

Cheap Trick played CS many, many times (and usually had top billing--but not for that show).
