Elija...

He traded in the Station Wagon for something a little smaller... not sure what it is, but think Mazda 323...

you used to be able to find him at Dennys, Whataburger and the library recently, but he comes and goes.

Bonfire mattered
Football mattered
Moses Hall still dominated intramural sports
Law & Puryear Hall existed but didn't matter
Everyone could drink and they did
Using a telephone to register for classes each semester - busy signals suck

There was an actual pancake house called Sambo's over in Eastgate. At least I think it was here into the 80's. My Dad and my older brothers remember going to it.

My mother talks about going to Sambo's to study... I think it was similar to what Sweet Eugene's is now.

My first few years everyone had to go line up for classes at the Pavilion - the 800 number to sign up for classes was a miracle of modern technology over that lining up crap.

And we still had that danged phone registration when I was in school. You woke up at 4am to start dialing, if you were lucky you had speakerphone with a redial button. Only to finally get connected with the system and then you press the wrong button and it cuts you off and says to try again later.

A street ran behind the Chicken and parking was a half paved, have mud hole across the street. Inside the Chicken was the same, except cheaper beer. Grahams Central Station was the cowboy bar to go to, until the owner blew it up and we all had to go to the Hall or the bar out on Tabor road. I turned 18 in July 1981 and was legal to drink. Drinking age raised to 19 on Sept 1st and I was illegal. Turned 19 in July 1982, and was legal again. Drinking age raised to 21 on Sept 1st and I was illegal once again. We could still get into bars, though. Roughly 25K students in early 80's. PLENTY of women. Nicest (newest) apartments were 1 block south of 2818 where Southwood Valley was being developed. We ruled the SWC in the mid 80's also.

before the convenience store was built down from the Chicken, there was a bar called the 12th man (yep, no trademark dispute). They had an outside window where you could buy tall boys for $1.00 and drink on the sidewalk. The party eventually spilled into the street. On Thursday nights the street in front of the Chicken was down to one lane going South. Amazing that no one ever got killed.

On Friday you could go to the Cow Hop and eat a cow pie and fries to get over your hangover.

Anyone remember the good 'ole auto-intro recording on the phone-reg system?

Something like "You have now entered the Texas A&M University something, something system"... It was a very distinctive voice that make it seem so spectacular... at the time.

There was the drive thru on Wellborn where you could pick up a 32 oz. draft beer for the road on your way home from Northgate.

I was actually asked by a cop "how much further do you have have to go to get home" when he suspected that I was over the limit. He let me go when I said about a mile.

My apartment complex threw keg parties.

We beat tu every year that I was an undergrad.

Social life/the weekend centered around football games.

The yell leaders told un-PC grode jokes at yell practice. Also at yell practice, the corps would routinely beat drunk opposing fans who ran on the field (often smashing their heads with their helmets).
