So just build your roster to beat the best teams? That's brilliant, why doesn't everyone do that?

LOL. Crazy idea.

It's why personally I think they should take a long look at the roster this summer. We're not blowing it up; but instead maybe think about who or how you're going to stop Hughes, Kaprizov and Boldy in the future.

Not sure if they've changed the rules, but if not we need to do what Vegas was doing and have a few guys like Seguin and Hintz on LTIR for the final month or two of the season and have them come back healthy in the first round ready to go.

Starting with the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs, NHL teams must adhere to the salary cap for their active game-day lineup. The 20-player roster (18 skaters, 2 goalies) dressed for each game must fit under the league's upper limit ($95.5M for the 2025-26 season), eliminating the ability to exceed the cap, according to PuckPedia and NHL.com.

Key 2026 Playoff Cap Rules
 • Active Roster Limit: The total cap hit of the 20 players dressed for a game cannot exceed the $95.5 million salary cap.
 • Deadline Compliance: Teams must submit their compliant 20-player roster by 3 pm local time or 5 hours before the game.
 • Full Cap Hit: Player cap hits are not prorated for the playoffs, notes PuckPedia. Full annual cap hits are used for calculations, PuckPedia adds.
 • LTIR Changes: Long-Term Injured Reserve (LTIR) relief is limited. Teams no longer get unlimited cap space to add players for the playoffs, explain The Athletic and TSN.
 • Tool Assistance: GMs are using a new playoff cap projector in the SAP-NHL Front Office app to manage compliance, reports NHL.com and ESPN.

Didn't get to see any of it, but BUF spanked the Habs to give us another game 7.

Sabres switched goalies again. Very similar to what DeBoer did with Otter, except Buffalo responded

Yep. These coaches keep switching up goalies and teams keep responding.

Waiting on FTAco07 to chirp in about how only dumbass teams do this even though all the ones that do it keep advancing further than the stars.

So now we're thinking that going to Casey would have changed the outcome of the series because other teams run two different goalies at times. Jake was not why we lost.

No seggy, no roope, busted ass Mikko, busted ass Miro, hurt Lunds, and struggling Harley are why we didn't advance.

Otter wasn't the culprit.

I also do not think Otter was the reason we lost this series, but I think most of us can agree that Otter needs to be a lot better than he was this past year, and really justify his massive salary. He's not consistent enough from period to period, game to game and month to month.

I think Otter is great when hes on but he seems mercurial and gets in the doldrums too easily. Nothing to point to especially. Just a feeling I get about him is he gets really down on himself
God loves you so much He'll meet you where you are. He also loves you too much to allow to stay where you are.

Seems to me Otter is putting lots of pressure on himself to the point it is awfully counter productive. But I don't think he's going to stop doing that until he wins something with the Stars or Team USA.

And yes, he won the gold in Milan but he clearly doesn't feel like "he" won it based on that quote the other day. Sitting on the bench through the entire Olympics really did a number on him mentally, I think.

Not every situation is the same.

Some coaches would have pulled Oetter in game one. No coach in the entire league would have gone to DeSmith in any of the remaining games.

Oetter needs to play better, but thinking that DeSmith is the answer is ridiculous.

Gotta disagree with the "no coach in the entire league" bit, respectfully.

I've said it before, and I'll reiterate: Otter wasn't near our biggest problem. He was very pedestrian with, what, a save percentage around .89. Going to DeSmith at any point doesn't say "DeSmith is better" or "he gives us a better chance to win this game". But, maybe it changes the mentality of the skaters and Otter. Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. We needed better than .89 to win that series. Would DeSmith have done better? Who knows, but Otter didn't.

Otter appears to be much better when he's fully engaged or just plain mad. Early in the series MIN was taking runs at him, and it seemed to wake him up. I think they realized this and backed off later. They could go after other guys and get penalties. That's how it appeared to me, but perhaps it's just observation bias or whatever.

The poster I responded to is constantly comparing very different situations. The teams that have been playing multiple goaltenders in the playoffs are situations where the goaltenders split the duties more evenly. They don't have a clear number 1 as the Stars have in Oetter. That changes how coaches will approach the goaltenders in the playoffs. It will take multiple games of really poor play to change from a clear number one goaltender.

What game would you have wanted DeSmith to get the start in?

Game 1: Oetter is starting with no question. Team played extremely poorly in front of him. I did think that he gave up a goal or two that he could have gotten. Gully might have pulled him if it wasn't for what happened last year. I think this was the only clear opportunity to consider putting in DeSmith. Especially if you want to wake the team up a bit.

Game 2: Don't think any coach goes with DeSmith here. Oetter has a history of bouncing back after poor performances. Not starting him in game two would show a huge lack of confidence in your number 1 guy. If a head coach starts DeSmith and loses, the heat on the head coach would be extremely hot.

Stars won. Oetter saved 28 of 30 and had a .933 save percentage.

Game 3: No coach is starting DeSmith after Oetter's performance in game 2.

Stas won in the 2nd OT. Oetter saved 28 of 31 with a .903 save percentage.

Game 4: You aren't starting DeSmith after winning two in a row.

Stars lost in OT after losing Nils. Oetter saved 40 of 43 and had a .930 save percentage.

Game 5: Oetter played well in game 4 so of course he's starting.

Stars lost and Oetter saved 24 of 27 with a .889 save percentage. He gave up 3 goals and I believe that he gave up two bad goals in this game. Goals saved above expected was only -0.65 though. This was a game where the Stars played poorly as a team. Turned the puck over constantly.

Game 6: This is the first game where someone could make a case for DeSmith to start. However, Jake usually bounces back from a bad game and has had a history of playing well in Minnesota.

In the series at this point Jake had 3 good games, 1 bad game, and 1 mediocre game. So, it's not like he was melting down out there. The Stars believe that he is their franchise goaltender and they are paying him like it. A coach knows that Jake is going to be his guy for his tenure here. It's going to take more than one bad game for a coach to sit down his clear number one who he needs for the next few years.

If you have to bench your clear number 1 net minder to fire up the team then you have a bigger culture problem than who is in net. To me the risk of showing no faith in your number 1 guy during a close out game far out weighs any potential the move might have in firing up the team. Hell, it's a close out game. It shouldn't take any motivational tricks to show up.

Oetter saved 16 of 19 with a .842 save percentage. Obviously not a good performance. The team as a whole didn't play well. I don't think that DeSmith would have made a difference though. Playing DeSmith in game 6 and losing could have had consequences that affected the team into the next season.

Oetter absolutely needs to play better. He has a habit of giving up that one goal a game that he just needs to get. He had a down year this year for sure. Hopefully, he bounces back next year. He's not going anywhere so like it or not the Stars will be rolling with Oetter.

Oh yeah, C'mon Buffalo!!!!! 3rd period coming up!

Can we agree that the only thing better than G7 hockey is G7 OT hockey? We may be headed for it.

Hi GrapevineAg, I'm still trying to figure out why it doesn't work though. Bah humbug, I'm still able to post there and I actually sent a request to Texags Staff to see if they could transfer my post over to the "Other Sports" of Miscellaneous Sports Misfits, but my sole purpose was just to get Hockey to the generally bored mass and expose them to a fun and exciting game that they may not always have been privy to.

We all love hockey in here, obviously, and i feel we've welcomed fans of other teams. There are some, but not many, fans that aren't Stars fans around here. Maybe just start a general 2026 NHL Playoffs thread (or women's hockey thread or whatever) in this forum?

Thank you, GrapevineAg! I'll create one tomorrow before Game 1 - Golden Knights vs Avalanche 7:00pm. See y'all there!

So Makar is the most important player in the NHL right?
