National Championship Meet General Preview

Nationals. One final meet. For it all.

Beginning Wednesday, the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships will convene in historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon. college track and field is a weird sport. What you do in the regular season seldomly matters come June. Rankings are thrown out the window when that first gun goes off. This is a team sport that has seen overwhelmingly favorites crumble as it's seen teams with an outside chance rise to the top. 21 events, some championship teams need scoring in 10+ events, some need about 5. There is no perfect formula to win this meet. It may be pretty, it may be ugly, it may take collegiate records, a team of multiple Bowerman watchlist athletes, it may take a plethora of 5th-8th place finishes. All that matters is who has the most points when all the events are tallied up.

How The Meet Is Scored
21 events. Each event awards points to places 1st-8th. 1st receives 10 points, then 8, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. The scores are then rallied for each school to determine the national champion.

How The Meet Is Structured.
Every race aside from the 5000 and the 10000 has a semifinal and a final. Races 800 and below (including the hurdles and relays) will have 3 heats of 8 runners each. To make the 9 person final. Getting to the final is most of the battle, it's almost guaranteed points. For the 1500 and 3000 meter steeplechase. There are 2 heats of 12. The top 5 from each heat and the next 2 fastest times advance to a 12 person final. For the 5k and 10k, field events, and multis there's no semis, just one final.

Field events such as the throws and horizontal jumps will have a prelims, then a subsequent final where the top 9 marks will advance to the final and be given 3 more attempts. The high jump and pole vault will have all 24 competing at once, there is an opening height for all athletes, but an athlete may open at a higher height. An athlete has 3 attempts to clear said height, but you will see take 2 and use their third attempt at a higher height.

The meet is spread across 4 days. Aside from the multi eventers. Each gender will have their own day to shine. The men will kick things off Wednesday with the semi final races and a few field events and have their final on Friday. For the women it's on Thursday and Saturday. The Heptathlon and Decathlon are each two days. The Decathlon will take place the first two days and the Heptathlon the next two days.

Men's Preview
Our men's team has a very solid chance of contending for the national championship. Our men's team has some versatility across multiple events. We have an entry in the 100, 400, 800, 1500, Steeplechase, 110 hurdles, and 400 hurdles. They also qualified both relays. However, they only have 1 field event athlete competing, which is Aleksandr Solovev in the men's pole vault. This is a very senior laden team and if there's ever been a close chance of winning it all, this group has as great of a chance as ever.

Our strength lies in some big hitters. We are 4th in entries for this meet. We will be relying on some big performances from Aleksandr Solovev who's ranked 1st in the pole vault. Sam Whitmarsh who has the best PB in the 800 field, Auhmad Robinson who's ranked 3rd in the 400 and has the capability to podium or win it all. As well as the versatility of Ja'Qualon Scott who in my opinion is the most valuable piece to this team. He's ranked 4th in both of the 110 hurdles and 400 hurdles but has the capability to easily medal in both; and he is also the first leg of our 4x100 relay.

We also expect to score big in the 4x400 and the meet may come down to that final race. The question is who runs on that relay. The prelim should be easy but we can't let up whatsoever with Florida and Alabama in the prelim heat. We have so many options to run the 400. We could place Auhmad Robinson, Kimar Farquharson, Cutler Zamzow, Hossam Hatib, Antonie Nortje, Eric Hemphill, or even Ja'Qualon Scott. The challenge will be picking the fastest 4. If it were me I'd go Cutler Zamzow - Auhmad Robinson - Hossam Hatib - Kimar Farquharson. Nortje hasn't been running his best lately but if completely healthy he can easily step in. The meet may come down to this race and to win it'll probably take a sub 3 minute race. We need these 10 points badly. All the other contenders will be in this race as well. For our men's 4x100, it'll take a huge huge race to get into the final. We don't have the strong anchor that other teams have. Ernest Campbell has been running well, but in 2nd leg sk we shouldn't move him. Last week we went Scott-Campbell-Mason Mangum-Robinson. Robinson doesn't have the straight line speed to keep up with other anchors. We'll be in a tough heat with Auburn, tu, and LSU. Beating one of these 3 would get us into the final probably. Anything can happen in a 4x100.

This team is strong and has some outstanding athletes, however, national championship teams cannot solely rely on a few big performers. It's usually the team with more bullets to score that comes out on top. Rankings are important for the fans to follow, but once the gun goes off, they are of little importance. This statement is heightened in the distance events. In a championship meet, a distance race rarely comes down to who ran the fastest time (with pacers in a meet where that one event was your sole focus). It comes down to racing, strategy, and most importantly guts. In the 800, but more so in the 1500 and Steeplechase, what matters is getting to the final, then racing smartly and strategically. This is why having two strong races like Cooper Cawthra (1500) and Victor Kibiego (steeple) is great to have. I mentioned the big hitters, but points here can be the difference between standing under the confetti at the end or coming up just oh so close. I really think Cooper Cawthra can surprise the country here and have a huge performance. 2 years ago Victor Kibiego placed 3rd at this meet. He dropped out of the race last season due to health. He looked strong last week and I hope he has a huge race left in him.

The competition is fierce. We are going in ranked 2nd based on PR's. USC is a much larger favorite thanks to their 17 entries and 8 entries between the 100 and 200. They are a speed factory with dominant sprinters and strong relays. They also have 4 field event entires. Having that many bullets who could score is scary and why they're the favorites. They have more room to slip up while also having more room for someone to step up and have a big day. They can add some points in the high jump, long jump, and discus. Arkansas will be a factor as well. They are led by sprinting phenom Jordan Anthony (a former Aggie receiver, who never got to step foot on the track for us). He has the capability for winning both events. They also have 2 more entires than we do at 15 with all kinds of depth. They have a strong 800 duo, two strong relays, a solid distance group, a strong high jumper and even a Decathlete. Georgia has one more entry than us, and 4 other schools have more than 11 entries: Texas Tech, Ole Miss, Tennessee, and Alabama. Auburn New Mexico, and Minnesota also have a chance to score big points from a few individuals.

Our men's team is solid. Pat Henry and staff have put together a strong squad for a moment like this. His famous saying goes, "it's all about everybody having a great day on the same day." We certainly have the potential to win the entire thing. It'll take some really great performances, multiple podium finishes, and some athletes to step up big time. It's going to be an interesting race to follow, I like our chances and I really hope we're the ones who come out on top.

Women's Preview
Our women sit in a similar situation as the men. One school is the favorite with us being ranked 2nd ahead of many other schools fighting along with us. Our women's team doesn't have the depth spread across as many events as our guys do. Our women's team is composed of the dynamic sprinting duo of Camryn Dickson and Jasmine Montgomery, a spectacular heptathlete in Sofia Iakushina, a spectacular triple jumper in Winny Bii, and a spectacular high hurdler in Jaiya Covington. We also have a strong steeple duo in Debora Cherono and Kennady Fontenot, a 400 runner in Jaydan Wood and two strong relays that can play a factor.

This women's team relies on the strength and versatility of Camryn Dickson and Jasmine Montgomery (and the trainers who keep them going after many races lol). They will both compete in Eugene, hopefully 8 times. They qualified in 4 events, the 100, 200, 4x100, and 4x400. They are so versatile and our staff asks a lot of them, and they always deliver. These sprinters have always been a vital part to a teams success, especially on the women's side. Sprinters like Abby Steiner, Rhasidat Adeleke, and others. We can do a lot of damage with these two girls. Their strongest event is the 200 and they have a better shot at scoring there. I'll break it down more in the event previews, but their 100 heat is insane lol.

As the meet will begin for the women with our runners taking center stage Thursday, Saturday will be huge for our women. Saturday we see the conclusion of the Heptathlon and the Triple Jump. Two events where we are expected to score big. Sofia is ranked first, with two amazing athletes ranked right behind her. It's very clearly a 3 way race between Sofia, Pippi Lotta Enock of Oklahoma and Jadin O'Brien of Notre Dame. When I mean every inch or second counts in this event I mean it! Winny Bii is tied for first with the best mark in the triple jump with a 45'11.75. She is tied with Agur Dwol of Oklahoma and Shante Foreman of Clemson who all have the same best jump this season. This will be an intense back and forth battle! It'll be on ESPN+.

Also on the track will be Jaiya Covington, the indoor 60 hurdle champion. With 40 more meters and a few more hurdles, she also has a chance of winning outdoors, but the competition will be even more intense! She is .15 behind the nation's leader in Harris of Florida, but like I've said many times, it's what happens when the gun goes off! Anything can happen, and Jaiya showed indoors she knows how to race when it matters most. Another surprise opportunity we could see some points is from the steeple. The two heats to me are really lopsided. Kennady Fontenot got placed in an extremely strong heat and I believe Cherono is in a much more manageable. Cherono has been improving each time she runs the steeple as it's her first year doing so. So I expect her to get into the final and fight for some points!

A big piece for our women will be the relays! Our women looked great in the 4x100 even after a sluggish start. They've changed the first leg multiple times this season. Last time out it was Jasmine Harmon, usually it had been Latasha Smith but she had a rough meet last week and didn't even run the relay. Jaiya Covington is also an option here. Legs 2-4 have remain the same with Dickson handing off to Bria Bullard and Montgomery closing out. I like our heat assignment and love having South Carolina and Baylor to our right to tag off of! I think this relay gets into the final with clean handoffs. Our 4x400 features Dickson and Montgomery, then usually it's been Jaydan Wood and Latasha Smith. Who knows is Smith is healthy, if she is she'd make a huge difference. We'll really need Wade to step up. This relay could easily get into the final with a great race, however there's not much room to slip up. Getting both relays into the final would be huge for us and very important to add some points.

As for the competition, the overwhelming favorite is Georgia. The dawgs have put together a really strong and balanced team. What separates them from the rest of the field is their string group of lady throwers. Something we are lacking. Georgia has the two best javelin throwers in the country. They have two PB's that are far ahead of the field. One of them is former Aggie Lianna Davidson who finished 2nd for us twice the past two years but she then transferred to UGA. I called it a devastating loss then and hoped it wouldn't come back to bite us and now here we are UGA expects to score 18 here, they have a top hammer thrower who could win it, and a really strong shot putter. They can score 30 alone in the throws, with 3 transfers from last fall. Their 3 throwers can podium as an entire team. They also have two of the best 400 runners in the country and two strong relays and a 400 hurdler who will score. UCLA has 13 entires, one less than Georgia, we have 12 as does Arkansas, LSU, and USC. Don't sleep on South Carolina or TCU.

On the women's side, we have very little room to slip up. If any. One bad event for us and we might not have a chance to win it all. Losing Davidson hurts, as does losing Katelyn Fairchild for the season. Georgia is stacked, but the throws can always be tricky. We'll have to follow what they do there. However we can still provide plenty of fight and still finish strong as a team. We have a strong group and can score big, let's hope they all have a great day on the same day! It will be fun to follow!

Having both sides in contention will make this a great meet. I'm the first to admit that I'm the problem when it comes to this sport. We feel as if this sport is national championship or bust and I'll be the first one upset if it doesn't go our way, but we (ESPECIALLY I) need to understand just being in contention and finishing as a top team in the country is such an amazing feat. Like I said at the beginning of this, this sport is so fragile and delicate. Just one bad race can take you out of contention. It really takes an entire team firing all at once to win a meet like this. Pat Henry has done his best to field an amazing team on both sides. This will also be the last time we see some of these guys in an Aggie uniform. It's felt like some of these guys have been part of the Aggie track family for so long, it's surreal thinking about how well never get to see Auhmad Robinson, Ja'Qualon Scott, Sam Whitmarsh, Kimar Farquharson, and others in the maroon and white. I really hope they can go out on top. I'll save the emotional stuff for later lol.

I'll be trying to provide as much insight as I possibly can the next week or so. I'll provide a preview for every single event, a daily preview and recap, as well as give you my predictions sometime time throughout the week. Then we can laugh at how wrong I'll be. It's going to be my favorite week of the year so buckle in and let's talk and watch Aggie Track and Field! If any of you have any questions about this meet or anything about track, remember there is no dumb questions. I want to grow this fan base, all are welcome!! Let's enjoy this championship meet, let's cheer like crazy, and let's BTHO Everyone!

It's hard to take our Aggie maroon glasses off while doing these sort of things because it's what you want/expect out of the people you care for and watch the most! It's going to be a battle between our Aggies vs USC. They have a lot more depth and options to score. Our game plan for viewing as fans is to hope USC doesn't get a lot of sprinters into the final. They have some quality in the field events that we need to keep off the podium and we need to hope their relays don't both medal.

On our side, I'm being optimistic but I really think Sam Whitmarsh can win this. He's a gamer, he's experienced, I believe he goes for gold. The real MVP when all is said and done and if we want to be the last man standing in my opinion is Ja'Qualon Scott. He just seems to thrive with competition. Some people are just natural born competitors, and his picture is next to that word in the dictionary. I'm not saying it all comes down to him, because it doesn't. But if he can have himself a day and podium in two events, or come close to that. That really puts us in the drivers seat.

I also have some faith in Aleksandr Solovev. I think he gets back over 19 this weekend and gives us a huge 10 points! And a much needed! I also want to hope that our 4x400 pulls through when it matters most. We know Auhmad has a 43 split in him, we just have to hope it's there on Friday. I really think Kimar can also go sub 45 easily, and Zamzow and Hatib can as well!

I have Auhmad getting 4th in the open 400, but he's also capable of winning the entire thing. He likes to take it easy in the prelims, but he needs an outside lane in the finals. He's in a tough heat, so let's hope he can get top two. I also have Cooper Cawthra running himself into the final. Winning the race is crazy with some 3:48 milers in there. But watch, he will score, especially if it's a sit and kick race. Victor Kibiego showed a little more in his last steeple and it also seemed like he had more in the tank but was focused on advancing first and foremost. I think he has an easy prelim and I think he goes for something special in the final.

The women's side, Georgia is just so overwhelming the favorite. They have an insane throws crew that can get top 5 as its own team lol. They also have an Olympian in the 400 and another strong 400 runner who could medal along with a medal contender in the 400 hurdles along with an Olympic high jumper and two strong relays.

Take my predictions with a grain of salt! I'm a throws coach who's going into athletic administration but currently a caregiver/provider for my mother. So while watching over her I get to watch and follow a lot of track lol! I promise I'm more than just a swiftie!

I think you're predictions were honest and tempered. Auhmad and Ja'Qualon could both easily take a first place which would be huge, with Ja'Qualon, if he has a phenomenal few days, possibly bringing in 16-20 points. Having been through a lot of high school track with my girls, you just never know who's going to show up to race when it counts despite the seedings.

You are exactly right! There should always be a disclaimer saying "anything can happen, and any little thing can change the entire outcome of a meet. A few fouls, a bad start, a bad handoff, one bad outcome. But this is why I love track and field, it takes near perfection and every single piece to do it's part for the whole to function!

Yes I believe Auhmad can win it all, and if I had to her on anyone it would be him. But he's also been inconsistent the last few 400's. I really think Ja'Qualon Scott would medal in both. Wouldn't surprise me to see him win the 110's but the room for error is slim!

Either way it'll be a really fun meet! All the possibilities make it the best sport in the world! What I always say is that success or failure is contagious in this sport. When one athlete has a great day, it spreads!

Men Event Previews

100
This race has major implications towards the team title. USC has 5 entires in this race, including 3 in the second heat! The goal is to keep as many Trojans out of this final! So we'll need some help from others. Jordan Anthony blew the track world away with a 9.75 last week. This meet he'll want to solidly himself as a premier world class track athlete. But this will be an elite final. Every year this event seems to get faster and faster and this is year is no exception. USF is a dark horse to compete thanks to their amazing relays and amazing sprinting, led by Abdul-Rasheed Saminu. Our Aggies will have Ernest Campbell competing! He too had his breakout race at regionals with a 10.02! It would do wonders if he had one more breakthrough and somehow got into the final, but that's will be an uphill climb. He's in a tough heat with Saminu and the 3 USC guys along with Jelani Watkins and Israel Okon of Auburn. 6 of the top 13 times in the country are in this heat, let's hope he can knock out some Trojans!

200
It's a similar story to the 100. USC is hoping to score big here. They are built on sprints. Garrett Kaalund of USC can win this race for them. So we need to see other pass him up. But I got my money on Charamba of Auburn who will drop a time close to 19.50. Jordan Anthony could also play into this race as well as Saminu. USC has two others in this race. Let's hope they don't multiple guys into the final. No Aggie men in this race, but title chances will be huge here with the final being the second to last race on Friday.

400
A really important event for the men. In a loaded field where 9 guys have ran under 45 seconds in their college career. It's all about getting into the final, and most importantly getting a good lane in the final. Auhmad Robinson is the Aggies best chance at scoring here. He has the 3rd fastest time in the country, behind Michai Danzy of Florida State and Samuel Ogazi of Alabama. Who are all 3 coincidentally in the same heat… so we really need Robinson to take one of them down. However, Robinson usually seems to reserve himself in prelims and a nightmare scenario is if he does so and just misses the final. He needs to be on his A game! He has the potential to win this race and those points would be huge, he's a gamer and let's hope he brings his best. Hossam Hatib is in the same heat in lane 9. If those big dogs run fast maybe Hatib can finish 4th in the heat and sneak into the final. He's ran nowhere near his Pr this season so hopefully it all comes together tomorrow. Cutler Zamzow also has the potential to get into the final, but he was dealt with lane 2. He'll need a crazy race to put himself into the final, but I'm not counting him out. USC also has a strong 400 runner in here, with the 4th best time coming in. Let's hope we can score big!

800
2 laps, so much on the line! And what a field it is! The reigning NCAA runner up and our very own Sam Whitmarsh will be one of the favorites coming in, but there's is so much talent on the starting line. He's in a very strong heat with 5 other guys with Pr's under 1:46. So there's no easy prelim run. Getting into the final is the first huge step. Whitmarsh was so close to winning it last year, he's been an excellent athlete for us the past 4 years and it'll be bittersweet watching him run in the maroon and white one last time. His experience and heart are why I predicted him to win this! A lot of these other runners ran their 1:45's months ago. Whitmarsh is rolling! The field is elite with Tinoada Matsatsa or Georgetown, two Oregon runners, 2 V Tech runners, and 2 Arky runners! This race will be interesting!

1500
Another loaded field, however 12 get to make the 1500 finals. There are 2 heats of 12, then the top 5 in each heat automatically qualify them the next 2 best times will make the final. There is one Aggie in this race and that is Cooper Cawthra. What a career the young man has had and it hurts knowing his time in Aggieland is almost over. The year by year progression he has made is a testament to his hard work and McRaven's coaching! He is an absolute gamer. You can never count out Cawthra in a race. He has 800 speed and 5000 strength. He's not a household name compared to the other 1500 runners like Ethan Strand, Gary Martin, Liam Murphy, Colin Sahlman, Abel Teffra and more. I think Cawthra got the easier heat, but this race is always about strategy and positioning. Cawthra has a strong kick, but he needs to put himself in prime position to use it! Getting into the final would be huge, it gives us an opportunity to add to our final. A final with a slow pace allowing Cawthra to kick and potentially score! It's what I predict will happen!

5000/10000
No Aggies in the 5k/10k but these races will still be great to watch for the average track fan! Despite ESPN going to commercial every 4 laps lol. The 5k is 12.5 laps and the 10k is 25 laps! This is where New Mexico hops to get onto the team title podium by showing off its strength in these two races. Habtom Samuel and Ishmael Kipkurui. The 5k will feature some more big names as many dropped the 10k in favor of it. Ethan Strand, Marco Longon, Drew Bosley and Rocky Hansen are household names in the 5k. The 10k leaderboard may only feature foreigners, but we'll see how that race goes!

3000 Meter Steeplechase
Are we becoming Steeplechase U! We qualified 3 steeplers, 2 women and 1 men. Here on the men's side Victor Kibiego will be toeing the line for the Aggies. Kibiego is experienced having raced in this meet before. In 2023 he placed 3rd in this race. Last year he had to drop out due to injury. That injury kept him out of cross country and he didn't rave indoors either. He slowly worked his way outdoors and looked his best this year at regionals. He seemed to have more pep in his stride and looked great coming off the hurdles. I think he played it safe and conserved his energy to assure he would qualify. I really like his heat and think he's in the easier one. A smart tactical run gets him into the final. Then it's everything he's got. Scoring would be ENORMOUS for the Aggies. No one in track media is counting on the Aggies to score in the 1500 and Steeple, but I believe we will!

110 Hurdles
JQ SCOTT… Remember the name. If you haven't learned it already, his name is Ja'Qualon Scott. Scott is the most dynamic hurdles in the nation. No one competes and excels in both events like JQ does. I said it in the preview, but if we are the ones with conferring falling on us at the end, it will be mainly because of this man. I'm not saying all the pressure's on him because that would be unfair. But what I'm saying is don't be surprised if he scores a lot for the Aggies. He's a competitor and he shines when the lights are the brightest. In the 110 hurdles he's got lane 5 and will be running an hour after his 4x100 leg. Again, like a broken record, this is the strongest this event has ever been, with 9 guys going under 13.30! The competition at the top is tough. tu's Kendrick Smallwood has gone 13.07, and there is a 13.13 and 13.14 by Marshall of Houston and Tharp of Auburn ahead of Scott's 13.16. But I believe Scott is peaking at the right time compared to the others. I can honestly seeing him win this race. I believe he has a better chance of winning this race than the 400 hurdles but I can see him medaling in both. The prelim will be a blood bath, let's see who gets through the final here, the hurdles are always wild.

400 Hurdles
Another Ja'Qualon Scott special. However, we also have Bryce McCray. Both can be a factor in this race. JQ has shown tremendous improvement in this race as one of the only. He's one of only 4 hurdlers to break 49 this season. Baylor's Nathaniel Ezekiel is an overwhelming favorite with a 47.89 best. Behind him is Saad Hinti of Tennessee and Kody Blackwood of tu who have a 48.44 and 48.78 best to Scott's 48.85. Last year Scott placed 4th in this final after an enormous PR. Let's hope for a similar improvement and a big race. He could do something special. I think he easily makes the final. And prelim placing is vital because you want an outside lane in this race for the final. Bryce McCray has Hinti and Blackwood in the same heat unfortunately, but maybe that'll push McCray to a time qualifier! It would be amazing to get both into the final here! Points points points!

4x100
A huge piece to the team standings will be this race. USC has the 4th best time coming in, but they can potentially win it all. They have the speed depth and talent to win this. But a sleeper to win it all if USC and A&M falter is South Florida, a story I love! They have the number 1 ranked 4x100 and 4x400. It'll be cool to see them win. This race will be explosive and every little detail will matter. USC has the guys, but their handoffs looked awful at the regional and they were even close to stepping over the exchange zone. There's a world they don't even finish the race, but if they have cleaned up their handoffs, they could easily win. Auburn, Tennessee, and a host of other sec teams can make a push. We're in the last heat and will be in lane 4. Auburn will be directly to our right and lane 5 so having them to chase down could be really really beneficial. Tu, LSU, and Georgia are all in the heat so it'll be a big race for the top 2 times. If we could somehow sneak into this final, that would be astronomical. At regionals we ran Ja'Qualon Scott - Ernest Campbell - Mason Mangum - Auhmad Robinson. We improved tremendously with this group, but Auhmad isn't the anchor these other schools have. So we'll have to have beautiful handoffs and run our best! Getting into the final and potentially eating some points from USC would be beautiful!

4x400
The grande finale. Oh how it always comes down to this race. So many teams are jumbled up together around 3:01-3:03. The Aggies have been sitting around 3:02 seemingly all year. They've yet to have one breakout performance. Us and Georgia are the only schools who qualified 3 in the open 400. We also have Auhmad Robinson who has split under a 44 at this meet twice. So maybe he runs his best when it matters most, we certainly will need it. Obviously there will be a lot riding on this race if the championship is on the line, but even if it's concluded in our favor or against it. It's a race that when we run our best we can even threaten the collegiate record. If Auhmad can split a sub 44, Kimar Farquharson will be rested up without the 800, and we'll see if Cutler or Hossam make the 400 final. If not, we'll have 3 fresh legs going for gold in this race. 10 points here would be huge for us. USC has a strong relay as well, they're in a tough heat but should still get into the final. Our heat will have Florida and Bama. As of now Florida and South Florida are tied with the exact best time. But when everything is on the line, rankings don't mean a thing in this race… it's who wants it more.

Pole Vault
Aleksandr Solovev. That's it, that's your preview. All joking aside, anyone who's watched track knows how volatile this event can be. This event is just as much mental. Solovev or Sasha, placed 4th indoors coming off a no height at the sec meet. He has been a lot better recently and should be rolling in with more momentum. He has the best vault this outdoor season by an inch, but he's still off from his personal best. So let's hope he turn it up some more tomorrow. The pole vault will be the second event scored so if we could put 10 on the board, my oh my how great that would feel. Opening height will be 16'11 or 17'0 which he will probably pass, then it goes 17'5, 17'9, 18'1, then go up 5 cm. Let's hope for no misses, but he also has the potential to just our height everybody! Let's start the meet off on a great note and get 10 points here!

Long Jump / Triple Jump / High Jump
Again, sad to have no Aggies in these events. We had two qualify indoors in the long jump but they failed to advance here. Our best triple jumper who would have easily qualified had to end his season due to injury. So no Aggies in these events. USC has a tremendous long jumper in JC Stevenson. He hasn't been near his heat this season, but is capable of winning the entire thing. That's what scares me about USC, they have a lot of dudes who can just win an event. Stevenson has that capability! But our system school Tarleton may have something to say about that, they have a long jumper Lokesh Sathyanathan who can win it all, as does Minnesota. There's a high probability Minnesota can end Day 1 with 28 points from the hammer and their jumper Charles Godfred! May take a high 26 to win, I'm talking 26'10. In the triple jump, USC has a jumper who is just ranked outside of scoring, but he hasn't hit his best this season either. Minnesota has a strong triple jumper too that can keep them in the title conversation, but he's inconsistent. Either way let's hope USC doesn't shock the world and score well above their predicted points here. In the high jump, it's a similar story. USC has a really talented high jumper, but this event is very unpredictable!! USC's Elias Gerald is talented and can podium here, I don't think he's in the conversation to win it, but like I said this event is known for many people to have off days! I do expect him to score, but he can easily win it or easily fall outside the top 8. It's not a deep event however, which is why I expect him to score. 7 guys have gone over 7'4!

Throws
A favorite event of mine, but not a single Aggie on the men or women's side throughout. The throws doesn't necessarily always have a huge impact on the team standings but this year it can. Minnesota is a dark horse team and they have the best 1-2 duo in the hammer. USC has an amazing discus thrower who I have getting 4th, but could jump up to 3rd if he has a great day, but the throws are unpredictable too as a lot of them have PB's they set on windy days or perfect conditions. South Florida has a good discus thrower as well. The World Record holder Mykolas Alekna is in this event and is worth watching just for him alone. Nebraska can make some noise, especially in the javelin and in the high jump. Field events are their specialty. Tarik Robinson O'Hagan of Ole Miss can do a lot of damage for Ole Miss and should medal in the shot and hammer. Former Aggie Bryce Foster will be competing in the shot put as well.
