Thought I'd make a thread for anyone who wants to discuss gymnastics at the Tokyo Olympics! The men's team qualified into the team final in 4th behind China, Japan, and Russia. Brody Malone and Sam Mikulak advanced to the all around competition. The women's qualification is at 1:00 in the morning but it will be shown on NBC prime time! The women's team is Simone Biles, Sunisa Lee, Jordan Chiles, and Grace McCallum!

Simone Biles looks like she hurt herself and has left the team event

They just said on the broadcast I'm watching that they've heard from the trainer is it is NOT an injury. It's "mental".

What in the world?

Out due to mental issues... ON THE BIGGEST STAGE IN THE WORLD is shocking! I hope she's okay but that's really rough from a fans perspective

Sure sounds to me like she's feeling too much pressure, not performing like she thinks she should, and doesn't want to perform below her peak. But if that's it, to pull out of the team event, that's just not ok.

She said in an interview last night that as a 24 year old she is not as fearless with her events as she was when she was younger.

But how do you absolutely dominate the sport for 8 years and crack at the Olympics where you've already dominated. I'd be pissed as a team mate

Yup event at her worst she can still help America win! One bad vault doesn't lose it all for us! But I'm extremely proud of how McCallum, Chiles, and Suni Lee have stepped us

I assume mental would still qualify under medical and they may be putting that terminology out there to try to minimize the speculation, but that's not going to do it.

It very well may be a physical issue, and if so that really sucks for her.

If it's mental, that's also tough for her, but at the same time she just can't pull out of the team event because of pressure as a competitor of her caliber.

Down only .8 with floor to go! If we beat Russia by a point in floor (which is possible, but tough) we can still win the team event

That should do it. Was a real good show of fight to close that 2 pt gap but unfortunately just not enough to take the gold.

LOL at these clowns on the broadcast....they don't know anything yet and this one guy is talking about how it's a great move and a veteran move... "she didn't want to be a distraction."

Bro...she is ON THE TEAM IN THE TEAM EVENT. Deciding to withdraw was the distraction. She hung her teammates out to dry. I wonder who girl #5 was that didn't get the chance to compete in the team event. I'm sure she's stoked to have not gotten that stage.

Everyone is going to circle the wagons to explain to the plebes how delicate she and others are and how this is actually a good thing.

Yes she didn't compete but it's also a team event... finishing 2nd isn't squarely on Simone's shoulders. The rest of the team, when it mattered, folded. You didn't see the Russians fold under pressure during the floor routine even after they had a really shaky balance beam stage.

While true, the ROC team also didn't have their best player and team captain walk off during the event. If she truly is injured, I get it. I'd bet the farm that she competes in the individual events though so this just looks bad

It makes me wonder if there is a pre-existing injury - something like a back which isn't obvious - that has played a role in her slippage this summer overall, and they've just kept it quiet. Something strange is going on. Hard to put any of this on the rest when they are shorthanded and scrambling last minute.

If she competes individual, lucy is going to have some splaining to do.

I blame the media 100%. One could tell in her interviews that she didn't quite see herself as the "demigod" NBC wanted her to be. I'm sure it boiled over and became way too much. Even with a sustained injury, the pressure to overcome it when she carried the team's weight is immense. The media wouldn't let up.

I'd be interested to see if she does. I heard that it was mental "injury". I'm not really sure what that means.

I also was kind of surprised that in every interview I watched of her during the qualification event she spent most of her time talking about how she was old, everything is starting to hurt, she's not as confident as she was, shes not as fearless as she was last Olympics and how she thinks a lot more about her safety while she's competing. Seems like she succumbed to those thoughts in the middle of the finals event. Which is surprising for arguably the greatest gymnast of all time but also in a human way completely understandable.

Yeah, I thought most of that was just humble-type talk from an older athlete, but in hindsight, perhaps she has really been battling some mental block demons

She may have gone Cougar on us. "I'm holding on too tight. I've lost the edge."

She never seemed the type to just back away from a challenge. Maybe she was worried about legit hurting herself? Terrible comparison, but maybe its like the yips in baseball and you can't do the basic things even remotely correct because you overthink once it really gets in your head. Only difference in gymnastics is that you could hurt yourself in a non-reversible way.

she's 24 - outside of Dominique Dawes, I think she's the oldest american gymnast to medal. She's slipping probably.

She did NOT look good in qualifying. Still got the benefit of the doubt and her routines have a higher difficulty rating but she had multiple issues the other night.

Unfortunately, I think Jade Carey, one of the alternates looked the best out of all them the other night. I think she got screwed on her beam score to not be able to compete in the individual event.

My wife (coaching women's vball & T&F for 10+ yrs) with her fancy sports psych background said that with women, they typically don't like the idea of having the "weight" of the nation on their shoulders, especially to the extent that Biles does. Women don't day dream about that sort of thing whereas men typically picture themselves with that type of challenge (aka overwhelming odds/weight of the world). Men tend to thrive on that challenge while women don't like that type of situation

I think pretty much any broadcast team in the world would react that way in the moment.

If she kept competing, and kept underperforming on the other apparatuses, that certainly would have been a distraction, too, like it already was coming off qualification. And a possible detriment to the team.

It's tough and I certainly have a mixed reaction to someone dropping out at that point due to mental health. Yes, I'm sure Jade Carey would have loved to have competed.

Is that confirmed? I earlier saw a few folks on Twitter say she would, but I think they were making an assumption when she said she wasn't physically hurt. I've since only seen folks say it's not been decided.

She said her pride is hurt a bit, and she's happy tomorrow is a training only day so she can have a nice mental health day.

I'd expect her to be back Thursday
