Swimmers did basically the same thing under the old 2-start rule. Anyone with a bad start (particularly in the 50) would false start on purpose so everyone was more careful....

HJ, there are loads of athletes that are representing countries they can't speak the language of....

What I'm trying to point out is that there are double standards. What they did was no worse than the 4 doubles teams. Yes it was OK in the rules to do this but it was pretty unethical and unfair to other teams who had good starts.

The other double standard here is that American born Tiffany Porter, who is representing the Brits, got flack earlier this year for admitting to not knowing the national anthem God Save the Queen. Yet no one in the British media is complaining about this person.

I'm sure you're all aware of this, but Breeja swam the breaststoke leg of the 4x100MR in the qualifying heats this morning, so if the "A" team can pull out a win tomorrow (which I think they will), there will be an Aggie with gold at these Olympics.

She would also be the first Aggie swimmer to ever win a gold medal in the Olympics. Christine Marshall got a relay bronze on the 800 free relay in 2008 in the same type of situation.

RVAg - They rarely talk about it since only the final 4 get to be on the medal stand. The only time it's really discussed is when a big name gets a medal that way. Natalie Coughlin's record tying medal this year was received that way. Most people have forgotten that one of Phelp's gold medals from Athens was also earned that way. He swam the butterfly leg in the prelims for the medley, and then gave up his finals slot so teammate Ian Crocker could earn a medal also. I'm sure if only the finals swimmers received the medal, he would've swum.

It appears Jaele was the last diver to qualify for the semifinals on the three-meter. She looked terrific on her first two dives, missed her next two and was underscored (I think) on her fifth and final dive.

Of note, she finished one spot ahead of numerous-time NCAA champion Anastasia Pozdniakova of Houston/Russia.

Fed wins 19-17 in the third! That was one of the most intense matches I've ever seen. They couldn't keep the crowd quiet. DelPo and Fed just hugged each other in exhaustion at the net for about 30 seconds. Fed's obviously my favorite(for anyone who has read the GS threads, but I also really like Del Potro, glad to see him playing at full health and top level. He was smashing that forehand all day. Seems he started to get a bit tired towards the end. Wow that was fun to watch while stuck at work.

Haven't seen emotion like that from Fed in a while. That was an incredible match. Gutted for Del Potro, but as a Fed fan, I really want him to finally complete that Golden Slam. Just amazing!!

I thought the US women looked sluggish in prelims of the 400 Medley Relay. Not one swimmer was faster than their flat start time. I'm glad Breeja swam it. I think anything but gold would be a letdown with Franklin, Vollmer, Soni, and Schmitt.

I think USA could earn two medals in the mens 50 free tonight. But a weak start by Ervin could be deadly. USA women sprinting is really lame right now. I can't believe no one can beat Hardy. (although it looks like several non-American NCAA swimmers can).

I think Phelps wins 100 fly and it will be decisive.

Franklin beats chunky Beisel for the backstroke win.

2:04:06 for Missy! WR and gold in 200m backstroke!

She just needed some rest! She blew away the field and the WR.

Phelps takes the 100m butterfly! wow what a race.

Phelps swims slow but wins anyway.

Ledecky's swim was more astounding than Franklin's 200 back WR. Wow.

Americans 3 for 3 so far in golds.

I was hoping she'd break the WR. For some reason, that record bothers me more than any other record set during the "suit era". Janet Evans held that record for an incredible 19 years, and she deserved to lose it to someone who beat it with ability alone, not ability + a ridiculous swimsuit. Even though there have been recent swims that beat her old record, including Ledecky's swim just now, it'll be nice to get that "suit" record off the books.

They have the possibility of 6 golds still in Table Tennis and Badminton.

In Table Tennis, they could get Gold in both Men's and Women's Team events.

In Badminton, they have a participant in the Gold/Silver match in Men's singles and also a person in the Bronze medal match. They will win a gold and silver in Women's singles as that match is between two chinese players and they also have a women in the bronze match. They also have a chance for gold in both Men's and Women's doubles.

So they still are in it for a max of 9 medals in Table Tennis and Badminton to finish those events out.

Jones has always been a better 50 swimmer. If you watch his 100s, his 1st 50 is always very strong but he ends up fading the 2nd 50.

I thought though that his 100 semis swim was not a good one. I expected him to be much closer to the finals. Jones dropped just 0.01 from prelims to semis.

Freaking NBC can't even RE-broadcast the 800M without breaking for commercial? Really?

I despise rooting for Serena, but I'm greedy for golds...so I guess...go, serena?
