After a 4-0 week, the Aggies made another move.
Well, not really.
Now 14-1 overall, Texas A&M remained ranked No. 22 in the latest D1Baseball poll as Michael Earley & Co. are set to begin conference play this weekend in Norman.
Behind a remainingly stingy pitching staff, the Maroon & White rolled to an 11-1 midweek win over Incarnate Word before sweeping Oakland over the weekend.
In their four victories this week, A&M outscored the Cardinals and Golden Grizzlies 39-7, as Aggie pitching again minimized free pass numbers, issuing only six freebies (four walks and two HBPs).
Across the first four weeks of the season, Jason Kelly’s staff has a 3.05 team ERA and a 1.01 WHIP. Shane Sdao, Weston Moss and Aiden Sims were each strong vs. Oakland as Sdao turned in yet another quality start, and Moss bounced back from a rough outing against UCLA with an efficient six innings to complete a doubleheader sweep on Friday. Not to be left out, Sims lowered his season ERA to 1.59 with five scoreless frames in Saturday’s series finale.
At the plate, Caden Sorrell led the way and celebrated his 21st birthday on Saturday with his eighth home run of the season. Through 15 games, he is slugging just under 1.000 and owns a gaudy OPS of 1.415 to go along with 28 RBI. Sorrell, along with a host of others, headlines an offense that is averaging 9.8 runs per game despite Chris Hacopian and Wesley Jordan remaining on the shelf.
Of course, the competition level is about to increase exponentially.
The Southeastern Conference boasts 11 teams in D1Baseball’s top 25. Even at No. 22 nationally, A&M is behind nine SEC clubs, including No. 9 Oklahoma.
The Aggies and Sooners will meet for a three-game series to begin conference play this weekend, but before making the trip to Norman, A&M hosts Stephen F. Austin to conclude a five-game homestand at Blue Bell Park.
First pitch between the Aggies and Lumberjacks is set for 6:02 p.m. CT on Tuesday.
