So let me get this straight...(this ? for the "it will take off" crowd)

In the provided scenario the plane appears to not be moving until it takes off, assuming the planes speed in mph is equally matched by the opposite moving conveyor belt.

What would the speed of the airplane be once it's wheels left the ground?

Would it slowly rise or quickly accelerate to 200 mph?

Dante: the plane IS moving forward before it takes off. Think about it - it's counterintuitive but it would actually happen. Thereby, the plane would accelerate and take off as normal. That's what the f'ing THE CONVEYOR IS MOOT crowd has been repeating for months.

I don't think it would ever take off as there is no movement of air under the wings. If movement under the wheels were that important, all planes would take off toward the East so that they would be moving counter to the Earth's rotation.

Think about tires spinning on ice or how funny the cat looks trying to run on linoleum.

The plane would be literally spinning its wheels.....until the motor running the belt burns out, at which time they may take off much faster than they had planned, possibly into orbit.

once again...the planes wheels are not powered...they will not spin on ice, they will not be used to counter the movement on the conveyor, they will not look like my dog running across the hardwood floor when the doorbell rings...

if you want to use your cat annalogy...what happens when the feline tries to stay in one spot on the floor but you give it a push? As fast as the cat can run against the outside force, it is never fast enough...the outside force (the jet engine/turbo prop/gerbil running in a wheel turning the propeller) always overcomes no force at all...

Are you saying that it is not possible for a conveyor belt to keep an object stationary if the object's propulsion is not from the wheels?
