Is the question, 'Can a jetplane take off from a stationary postition?', or 'Can a jetplane advance foward on a conveyor going in the opposite direction at teh same speed of the plane?'

I just finally got around to reading this one. I didn't read much beyond the first post, but here's my input. As the question is worded:

I will make three assumptions:
1) When it says "plane speed", it means the speed of the actual plane through the air.

2) The conveyor will simply go fast enough to match the speed of the plane. No faster. In other words, not fast enough to utilize the friction of the wheels in order to keep the plane from going anywhere.

3) The wheels and conveyor will not break.

Using these assumptions, which I think are appropriate, the plane will fly. The wheels will have to turn twice as fast as they normally would, but that's not a big deal, as long as they don't break.

Now, if the question had been worded "the conveyor will go fast enough to prevent the plane from moving", then the plane will not take off as even the small amount of friction within the wheels will be enough to prevent take off given enough wheel speed.

The plane flies. The Engines have to exert a little more force than normal to get up to flight speed because of the frictin caused by the conveyor belt, but the plane flies.

Any Aerospace engineers want to model a proof for us?

And Mechanical engineers, would you please post a good equation for modelling rolling friction in Airplane tires?
