There are some airplanes, namely the Beaver and Otter, which were designed for short takeoff and landing in the days before helicopters were used. When these are fitted with turboprops (usually they have piston engines) the wash of the engine throws so much air over the wings that they probably could takeoff and land from a standstill if there were a strong headwind (30-40 mph).

The headwind required in order for most airplanes to takeoff from a standstill would be from 100-200 mph. The fastest wind at groundlevel that I know of is about 70 mph. Except of course a tornado or hurricane. But then why would you try to go flying in a tornado or hurricane.

So, the wheels would have to be frictionless??

if the plane actually doesnt move, stays stationary to its relative startign position on the "conveyor belt" it wont. obviously this has been stated. im saying it again.

the argument against that is that the engines provide the forward thrust. the wheels have nothing to do with it.

Only 4?! Are you people serious!! Yes I said it. YOU PEOPLE!

yes, the engines provide forward thrust. however, if the displacement of the plane is in fact 0, as i believe it would be with a plane on a theoretical conveyor belt, there is no air over the wings, therefore, there is no lift.

if the wheels aren't what is providing the forward thrust then it doesn't matter how fast they spin in the opposite direction. the plane would still move forward because of the engines. This would give you the wind force needed for lift.
