Right-hander Clayton Freshcorn to return to Texas A&M

Clayton Freshcorn is returning to Texas A&M.

On Tuesday, the right-hander announced that he will remain in Maroon & White for the 2027 season.

Getting the 6-foot and 180-pounder back is obviously a big piece for Michael Earley, Barry Enright and the Aggies, and the decision comes after the St. Louis Cardinals selected Freshcorn in the 19th round of the 2026 MLB Draft on Sunday.

As a junior this spring, Freshcorn was a first-team All-American and NCBWA Stopper of the Year finalist after recording 12 saves in 27 appearances. In 54.1 innings, he was 4-3 with a 2.82 ERA and 1.05 WHIP. Further, he struck out 56 batters and walked only six, holding opponents to a .244 average against.

His dozen saves tied Kasey Kalich (2019) for fourth in a single season, as Jason Jester (2013) and Nolan Hoffman (2014) top the list with 14.

Additionally, nine of Freshcorn’s 12 saves spanned multiple innings as he was far from a traditional “closer.”

Further, it would seem that his relief days are behind him, at least at the collegiate level.

Given his performance in the College Station Regional vs. Southern Cal and the fact that he challenged for a starting spot last February, Freshcorn figures to bolster A&M’s rotation that already includes another All-American right-hander in Aiden Sims.

This summer has been an important one for Earley & Co. Given that the pitching staff needed an overhaul after posting a 5.24 ERA in 2026, Enright was hired from the Athletics on June 11, and to date, the Aggies have welcomed the commitments of six arms from around the country.

However, the news that Freshcorn is back is assuredly music to Aggie...ears.
