Jackie Sherrill speaks on A&M's production at tight end against NMSU
A hot start allowed No. 15 Texas A&M to cruise to victory on Saturday night against New Mexico State. Legendary coach Jackie Sherrill joined TexAgs Live to discuss the performances of Theo Melin Öhrström and Tre Watson, as well as discuss the Aggies' final stretch.
Key notes from Jackie Sherrill interview
- New Mexico State was a game where you come out and play well. I hated playing teams that were much more talented then. You jump out ahead, and then suddenly, you are playing your second or third teamers. That happened Saturday. We jumped out with 28 points and then only seven each quarter after that.
- I have been to Auburn's stadium many times as a player and coach. Playing at Auburn is not easy, and we found out in South Carolina that it is not easy on the road.
- Auburn has improved. They settled on Payton Thorne as their quarterback, but they still use Jarquez Hunter in their run game.
- Everyone around the SEC is trying to figure out who will play in the SEC Championship game. That game has been built up and is important to every team in the SEC. Our students are thinking about the Texas game.
- If you compare Georgia's team this year to its teams in the last couple of years, the difference is the tight end position. When we had great teams in the 80s, we had a really good tight end.
- Today, in spread offenses, tight ends do most of their work in the middle of the field. Most teams play either man across the board or cover two. Man coverage would put a strong safety or outside linebacker on the tight end. Cover two vacates the middle of the field, and the tight end works against the linebacker. Using the tight end makes your offense a lot more complicated.
- It is not easy to keep your guys focused. Sometimes, you have to push and force the players to concentrate. It is harder today with social media. You try to do it psychologically. I stretched the truth a little bit about how good our opponent was. The advantage that Texas has is that they have a home game this week. We have to travel at night. We lose a day of rest and preparation.
